Fifteen-year-old Richie Choi dropped just eight games in 5 matches, culminating with a 6-2 6-0 victory over defending champion Jack Cooper in the final to capture his maiden B18 singles title. Meanwhile, Kimika Fukui, last year’s G14 champion, defeated Chloe Wong, the 2025 G16 winner, 6-2 6-1 to take home the G18 crown this time round. Mr. Kiyotaka Ando, Executive Director, Chairman of the Board, and Chief Executive Officer of Nissin Foods Company Limited; and Mr. Oscar Chow, Hon. Secretary of Hong Kong, China Tennis Association, presided over the prize presentation ceremony at Victoria Park Centre Court on 30 January.

“The Hong Kong National Juniors was a great success, featuring many hard-fought matches throughout. The standard across all age groups is certainly on the rise. The HKCTA is continually exploring ways to streamline the event and run it over a shorter period, enabling players to participate in other international competitions,” notes HKCTA Head of Performance, Ahmed El Menshawy.

In the B18 final against Cooper, Choi produced a service break in the second game and quickly consolidated for a 3-0 lead. There were no further breaks until 4-2 when Choi proceeded to go on an eight-game run to close out the match 6-2 6-0. Choi was dominant on serve from start to finish. The only time he got into trouble was in the fifth game of the second set when he had to save three break points before holding serve to secure a 5-0 advantage.

Last year, Choi won the B16 title to add to the B12 and B14 he won back in 2023.

Elsewhere, in the B16s, seventh-seeded Wong Him defeated No. 4 seed Justin Chan in the quarterfinals and then saw off top-seeded Jerome So 6-2 6-3 in the final to bag this year’s honours.

In the B14s, No. 1 seed Wong Him dropped just 12 games in five matches, culminating with a 6-1 6-1 victory in the final over qualifier Sun Ham Siu, who had earlier knocked out the 2nd, 7th, and 8th seeds.

“Wong Him set the benchmark in the Boys’ 14 & 16 Under, displaying composure and dominance from the opening round through to the final. His consistency from the baseline, balanced with smart shot selection and tactical awareness, allowed him to control matches with authority,” remarks HKCTA Head of Performance, Ahmed El Menshawy.

Prior to this year, Wong Him had not tasted victory in singles just yet, for he was a runner-up in both the B10 singles in 2022 and the B12 singles in 2024.

“Throughout the event, he showed impressive mental focus and maturity, rarely giving his opponents a chance to shift momentum. Him’s commanding performance not only secured him the title but also set a high standard for the age group this season,” Ahmed El Menshawy added.

In the B12 final, top-seeded Alexander Kwong and No. 2 seed Ho Chun Pak broke each other once in the early going to arrive at 2-2. From there, Kwong managed to wrestle 10 of the next eleven games to run away with a 6-3 6-0 victory to claim his first age group title. In 2024, Ho Chun Pak was the B10 runner-up.

Earlier in the G18 semis, Chloe Wong, last year’s G16 winner, ended the reign of top seed Rosalyn Chan, the three-time defending champion. Chan was the singles champion in G10 in 2018, G12 in 2020, G14 and G16 in 2022, and the reigning G18 champion since 2023.

However, in the final, it was Kimika Fukui, who beat Chloe Wong 6-2 6-1 to add to the G14 crown she captured last year. Leading 3-2, Fukui broke serve twice and won three games in a row to take the first set 6-2. Then, with the score tied at 1-1 in the second set, she went on a five-game run to close out the match in straight sets.

In her four matches, Fukui conceded just seven games.

Only Patricia Hy (1978) and Paulette Moreno (1982) have managed to capture the G18 title before their 14th birthday.

In the G14s, Leah Lau defeated Tsang Yuk Ying to capture this age group title for the first time. In 2025, Leah captured the G12 title after placing second the year before. In 2023, she was a runner-up in the G10s.

In the B16 doubles final, No. 2 seed Justin Chan/Wong Him broke top-seeded Aiden Luk/Jerome So twice in a row late in the first set to take the opener 6-2. Luk and So then broke the second seed twice in succession to jump out to a 5-0 lead before settling for the set 6-2.

In the third set super-tiebreak, Chan and Wong jumped out to a 4-1, then 8-2 lead, only to see the top seed peg the score back to 8-5. After Chan and Wong pocketed the next point to go up 9-5, Luk and So saved four consecutive match points to draw even at 9-9. The No. 2 seed then got a mini-break off So to lead 10-9 before Wong held serve to conclude the encounter 6-2 2-6 [11-9].

Nissin Foods has been the title sponsor of the Nissin Cup Noodles Hong Kong Junior Series and Nissin Demae Iccho Hong Kong Junior Novice Competition since 2015. In 2017, Nissin Foods expanded its backing to the Nissin Hong Kong National Junior Tennis Championships.

The Hong Kong National Junior Tennis Championships, Hong Kong Junior Tennis Series, and Hong Kong Junior Tennis Novice Competition are the three flagship local junior events organized by the HKCTA annually that seek to provide more competitive opportunities for young players of various age groups.

All of Hong Kong’s top juniors in years past have competed in the Hong Kong National Junior Tennis Championships at one time or another. Coleman Wong, for instance, who became the first player from Hong Kong to reach the men’s singles third round of a Grand Slam at the US Open last year, was a runner-up in the B10s in 2014 and won the B12s in 2015 and 2016 before he went on to capture the Junior Orange Bowl B14 title in 2018.

Another example is Venise Chan, who captured the G12 and G14 in 2001, G14 in 2002, G16 in 2003, and G18 in 2004. She earned a full tennis scholarship to attend the University of Washington where she reached a career-high NCAA Division I ranking of No. 9 in singles and was twice All-America.

In 1996, the K-Swiss Hong Kong National Junior Championships attracted 500 entries across 11 events in various age groups. This year’s championships totalled 18 events with over 1300 entries. The B14 singles received the most number of entries (198), followed by B12 singles (179), B16 singles (132), and G12 singles (124).

Following the introduction of the under-10s competition in 2001, the only players to capture two or more consecutive singles titles in this particular age group here at the Hong Kong National Junior Tennis Championships are Kevin Wong (2004-05), Robin Nguy (2006-07), Walter Tam (2017-19), and Kyle Wan (2020-2021) for the boys, while Katherine Ip (2004-05), Caroline Lampl (2006-07), and Cody Wong (2011-12) are the girls to accomplish this feat.

Note that since the advent of the 10 & Under competition in 2001, Ophelia Tang is the only player to complete the full set of age group singles titles to date—G10 in 2016, G12 in 2018, both G14 and G16 in 2020, and G18 in 2021.
