(November 11, 2025, Hong Kong) In the semi-final of the Youth Men’s Team event at the National Games, Team Hong Kong faced Jiangsu in a hard-fought contest. In the first singles match, Hong Kong’s Jack Cheng was defeated by Chris Xu in straight sets, 0–6, 1–6.

In the second singles match, Hong Kong’s Nicholas Cheng took on Hu Jia of Jiangsu. After dropping the first set, Cheng rallied to take the second 6–3, leveling the match at one set apiece. He eventually fell short in the deciding set, narrowly losing 4–6, resulting in a 1–2 defeat.

With an overall score of 0–2, Team Hong Kong concluded their semi-final campaign against Jiangsu. However, the team secured a historic bronze medal — Hong Kong’s first-ever medal in a tennis team event at the National Games.

“Although there was a significant difference in strength in the first match, Jack gave his best,” said Coach Leo Liu after the match. “In the second match, Nicholas battled for nearly two and a half hours and narrowly lost in the final set. All our players gave their utmost and performed to their full potential. Winning a medal in the Youth Men’s Team event is a major breakthrough and a significant boost for tennis in Hong Kong. Achieving this result in such a high-level national competition is no easy feat — we will continue to strive forward.”

“I’m very happy to have won our first medal in the tennis team event together with the entire team. We all put in a lot of effort,” said James Wong Tsz Fu. “Although the bronze wasn’t the result we were aiming for, I’m still proud to have earned a medal for Hong Kong tennis. Looking ahead to the upcoming Men’s Singles event, I’ll give it everything I’ve got. I won’t overthink it and I’ll just keep going and hope to win another medal for Hong Kong.”

The Hong Kong team will next compete in the first round of the Men’s and Women’s singles
events on 13 or 14 November.
