Hong Kong, China Tennis Shines in Davis Cup, WTA and ATP Tournaments!

Persistent investments imperative to long-term development

Hong Kong, China – 4th February 2025 – The Hong Kong, China Davis Cup team returns from Namibia today after a thrilling 3-2 playoff victory, successfully retaining its World Group II status. This playoff showcases the determination and skill of our players, led by world No. 165 Coleman Wong and veteran Kevin Wong.

Captain Yu Hiu Tung expressed pride in the team’s performance, stating, “It’s crucial for us to stay in World Group II. This experience is invaluable for our young players’ development.” Michael Cheng, President of the Hong Kong, China Tennis Association (HKCTA) echoed similar sentiments by emphasizing the importance of continued investment in young talents to build a robust tennis community in Hong Kong.

In addition to Davis Cup success, the Prudential Hong Kong Tennis 125 has been recognised second place in the WTA 125 Tournament of the Year voting, while the Prudential Hong Kong Tennis Open has been awarded ‘WTA 250 International Tournament of the Year’ at the 2024 Women’s Tennis Association’s Tournament of the Year Awards, ahead of 22 other WTA International Series events held around the world in its category. These accolades highlight our commitment to hosting world-class events that position Hong Kong as a premier destination for tennis.

Moreover, the successful completion of the ATP 250 tournament underscores our dedication to elevating the standard of tennis in the region. These achievements would not have been possible without the unwavering support from our partners, volunteers, and the local community.

The success of Hong Kong’s elite tennis athletes is also significantly bolstered by the Hong Kong Sports Institute (HKSI). Tennis is a Tier A sport at HKSI, providing essential funding and support that has been instrumental in developing talents like Coleman Wong and 41 other elite and aspiring tennis athletes.

Michael Cheng noted, “The support from HKSI has been invaluable in elevating the game to an elite standard. Without this funding, access to essential coaching, training facilities, and opportunities for international competition would be severely limited.”

As we celebrate these achievements, support is crucial in nurturing talent and promoting the sport. Together, let’s continue to raise the profile of tennis and inspire the next generation of players! Together, we can make a difference!
