In a final where both players were content to engage in a protracted cat-and-mouse baseline battle, Raul Guardia overcame a second set letdown to beat Sunny Yue 6-1 2-6 6-4 to claim the men’s singles title. Meanwhile, Yandy Shek trailed 4-6 2-0 in the ladies’ singles final when her opponent, Vienna Lai, was forced to retire with a physical ailment.
It was both Guardia and Shek’s maiden singles triumph here at the Bank of China Hong Kong National Tennis Championships.
The men’s title match pitted the past two SCAA Open winners, 2024 champion Raul Guardia and 2025 titlist, Sunny Yue.
Guardia has now won the past three local majors. Last year, he beat Franco Di Giorgio 6-3 6-3 to bag the SCAA Open and then dispatched teenager Walter Tam 6-4 6-4 to claim the CRC Open.
The last player to capture all three local majors in the same calendar year to attain the men’s Triple Crown was Jack Wong, who accomplished the feat in 2022. He defeated Kevin Wong to win the HK Nationals, then saw off Ethan Leung to win SCAA, and then defeated Kevin Wong at CRC to accomplish the feat.
In the ladies’ singles, top-seeded Yandy Shek captured her maiden Hong Kong National title after she beat Vienna Lai in the final. Lai, 19, took the opening set 6-4 but was then forced to retire in the second set while trailing 2-0.
Shek has now reached the final of the past three local majors, finishing runner-up last year to Maggie Ng at the SCAA Open and then defeating Kallista Liu to win the CRC Open.
The last player to attain the women’s Triple Crown was Eudice Chong, who beat Cody Wong to capture the HK Nationals, SCAA Open, and CRC Open in 2020.
Shek is currently ranked at a career-high WTA No. 691. In 2025, she reached two ITF World Tennis Tour finals, finishing runner-up at the W15 Tweed Heads in Australia in August and at the W15 Phan Thiet in Vietnam in November.
In the men’s doubles, qualifiers Kam Tik Long/Christian Sean Wong defeated Jack Cooper/Douglas Geiwald 6-4 2-6 [10-7] in the opening round, overcame No. 3 seed Franco Di Giorgio/Raul Guardia 6-3 3-6 [10-8] in the quarters, Felix Lam/Li Ho wan 6-1 6-3 in the semis, and Fong Ching Kit/Steve Ng 7-6(4) 6-2 in the final to capture this year’s title.
Kam and Wong produced the first service break in the eighth game and served for the opening set with a 5-3 lead in hand. However, Fong and Ng broke back to force a 5-5 impasse before both sides held to extend proceedings to a tiebreak. Trailing 4-3, the pair of qualifiers won the next four points in a row to take the opener.
In the ensuing set, Fong and Ng came up with an ace on break point to force deuce before holding for a slender 1-0 lead. Kam and Wong then put together a devastating 5-game run to jump out to a 5-1 lead. Fong and Ng then saved a match point to hold for 5-2 before the pair of qualifiers held serve at 15 to win in straight sets 7-6(4) 6-2.
In the ladies’ doubles, Justine Leong/Athena Yeung began by defeating No. 3 seed Ki Yan Tung/Marinel Rudas 6-4 6-2 in the first round.
