The Government announced today a number of amendments to the vetting criteria of “M” Mark events. HKCTA fully supports the Government’s directive to strategically focus on world-class events as opposed to Asia / Regional ones. We also welcome the adoption of a sliding scale to determine the funding ceiling, as bigger events with higher traction should receive more support.
Aside from our flagship international events—WTA 250 Prudential Hong Kong Tennis Open and the ATP 250 Bank of China Hong Kong Tennis Open—we are bringing Ultimate Tennis Showdown (UTS) to Asia for the first time. This exciting world class event caters for the new emerging competition, and we are in the process of applying for its “M” Mark status as well.
Tennis has the Government’s backing and that is why we have the opportunity to continue hosting annual world tour events and also break new grounds, but with great support comes great responsibility. That is why we are committed to working with the Government and different stakeholders to build a sustainable sports strategy. This will establish a novel brand in the Greater Bay Area and enhance the attractiveness of Hong Kong as a mega event sports hub and travel destination.
