Hong Kong, China – 2nd February 2025 – The Hong Kong, China team defeated Namibia 3 – 1 in Windhoek to secure a World Group II spot later this year. World No. 165 Coleman Wong and veteran Kevin Wong led the way with key wins to cement the victory in the playoffs for the fourth time in a row. The team will join China or Montenegro, Benin or Latvia, Jamaica or New Zealand, Saudi Arabia or Ireland, Zimbabwe or Morocco, South Africa or Nigeria, El Salvador or Moldova, Estonia or Venezuela, Dominican Republic or Bolivia, Slovenia or Indonesia, Paraguay or Syria, and Cyprus or Thailand in the first round in September.
“I’m happy we got the job done. It was great to see that our players came together as a team and supported each other, and gave it their best. Their determination was unmistakable. It’s important that we stay in World Group II, and for the young guys on our team, it’s added experience and part of their growth process,” said Captain Yu Hiu Tung.
“Competing in an away tie is never easy, so I’m really proud of the way our players performed. We have a young team and we need to have the resources to invest in the future. We want to rally the players around a TeamHK concept and establish a strong and dedicated following with our tennis community. We look forward to the challenge in the World Group II first round in September,” said Michael Cheng, President of the Hong Kong, China Tennis Association. Hong Kong, China’s best spell in the Davis Cup occurred between 1988-1992 when the team reached the Group II Final four times, defeating Pakistan in 1988 and Thailand in 1992 to gain promotion to Group I. Hong Kong, China’s most recent run to the Group II Final came in 2003 when the foursome of Wayne Wong, Yu Hiu Tung, John Hui, and Brian Hung were defeated 4-1 by a Chinese Taipei side led by Rendy Lu and Jimmy Wang in Kaohsiung.
