Overview

A brand new Officiating Committee was formed by the HKCTA in 2003 to take up the challenge of moving forward with regards to the development, improvement, training and assignment of officials at all levels of tennis in Hong Kong, from the grassroots level to professional events, work previously done by the now dysfunt Umpires Section.

Tennis officiating began in Hong Kong more than 30 years ago, but without a proper, organised structure. An ongoing program for the recruitment and training of new officials offers an opportunity for tennis enthusiasts to become involved in a variety of officiating roles, ranging from working in local junior/senior tournaments and public court events to officiating in Davis Cup ties and ATP Tour events. In fact, Hong Kong has the largest number of certified umpires per capita than any other Asian countries and our umpires are continually being invited to officiate in overseas events. Currently, there are about 100 members in the Section.

Comprehensive training will be offered to those who are interested in becoming Line Umpires, Chair Umpires, Chief Umpires or Referees. All umpires are regularly assessed and evaluated by experienced and qualified officials. These evaluations serve to help officials improve their on-court performance, thus maintaining the highest standard possible. After gaining sufficient experience, promising officials will be recommended to attend officiating schools organised by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) to achieve international qualifications. Financial support may also be provided to such officials.
