Mr. Tau Luu was born in Vietnam in 1944. In 1969, he represented Vietnam in a Davis Cup tie against South Korea in Seoul. Due to instability caused by the Vietnam War, Mr. Tau moved to Hong Kong after the tie.
Mr. Tau Luu dominated the local tennis scene after arriving in Hong Kong. He won the CRC men’s singles title 8 consecutive times from 1970-1977, a record that still stands today. He won the Hong Kong National Grass Court Tennis Championships in 1970 and 1976, and captured 3 men’s singles crowns at the SCAA Open
from 1974-1976. In fact, he swept all 3 men’s singles titles at the Hong Kong National Grasscourt Championships, SCAA Open, and CRC Open in 1976. At the CRC Open during the late 70s and early 80s, he also won 6 mixed doubles titles. Mr. Tau Luu is best known for his powerful forehand and pinpoint accurate smash.
In 1977, he won both the singles and doubles titles at the Pattaya Open in Thailand, and the doubles at the Hong Kong Invitational Hardcourt Tennis Championship. Mr. Tau Luu was the coach of the Hong Kong Davis Cup Team in 1981.
In 1985, at the age of 41, he still managed to sweep all 3 men’s doubles titles at the Hong Kong Closed
Hardcourt Championships, SCAA Open, and CRC Open.
Mr. Tau Luu passed away in 1999 due to cancer.
