H.A. Nisbet

Biography

Hugh Adair Nisbet was the first-ever Hong Kong champion by virtue of his triumph at the inaugural Grass Court Championships in 1911. After winning twice more in 1913 and 1914, he made his way back to final again in 1917, but this time, he was upended by S.E. Green, the runner-up from three years earlier. In men’s doubles, Nisbet reached the final in 1918 partnering H.R.B. Hancock, but they were defeated by Ng Sze Kwong and Wong Po Keung. From 1911-1928, Nisbet was the Registrar of the Supreme Court under The Companies Registry (Hong Kong) that was tasked with enforcing the first Companies Ordinance in the territory.

Note: The H.A. Nisbet who reached the men’s singles and doubles finals at the US Open in 1897, as well as the men’s doubles finals at Wimbledon in 1896, 1898, 1899, and 1900, was Harold Adair Nisbet.
