Team Hong Kong Historically Wins Gold and Bronze Medals at the 20th Asian Games

The Hong Kong, China Tennis Association (HKCTA) is immensely proud of the outstanding results achieved by its athletes at the 20th Asian Games held at Aichi-Nagoya. Coleman Wong captured Hong Kong, China’s first-ever medal at an Asian Games singles event, winning Gold after defeating China’s Wu Yibing in the final, while Eudice Chong and Cody Wong claimed Bronze in the Women’s Doubles, ending a 64-year wait since Tsui Yuen Yuen won Silver in 1962 alongside her Ceylon partner Ranjani Jayasuriya.

Seeded No. 1 in the Men’s Singles event, Coleman received a bye into the Second Round and went on to defeat Zaid Al-Mashni of Jordan, Yosuke Watanuki of Japan (Silver Medallist at the 2022 Asian Games), and Kasidit Samrej of Thailand in straight sets. In Semi-final, after dropping the opening set, Coleman staged a remarkable comeback to defeat Khumoyun Sultanov of Uzbekistan 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. In the Final, Coleman delivered a commanding performance, firing 16 aces and winning an impressive 88% of his first-serve points en route to a straight-sets 6-2, 6-4 victory over No. 3 seed Wu Yibing of China to claim the Gold Medal.

Asian Games Men’s Singles Gold Medallist Coleman Wong said,” I’d like to thank everyone for their support. A special thank you to my family and my team for standing by me and training with me every day. There’s still a long way to go, and I’m always looking to achieve more and more. We’ll keep working hard because I believe we’re going to accomplish something great.”

In the Women’s Doubles, sixth seeds Eudice and Cody displayed excellent chemistry as they powered their way into the Semi-finals, with victories over teams from Mongolia and Kazakhstan, thereby securing a medal for Team Hong Kong. However, the pair narrowly missed out on a place in the final after falling 6-4, 6-2 to fifth seeds Chinese Taipei’s Chan Hao-ching and Wu Fang-hsien, who had eliminated the top seeds in the previous round. Nevertheless, Eudice and Cody still won a Bronze Medal, becoming the first pair of Hong Kong players to win a Doubles medal.

Asian Games Women’s Doubles Bronze Medallist Cody Wong said, “We have worked incredibly hard in preparation for these Asian Games. Eudice and I have trained together extensively and competed in many tournaments as a team, all with the goal of performing well here. I am really proud of what we have achieved together and delighted to bring home a medal for Hong Kong.”

Her partner Eudice Chong added, “This is my fourth Asian Games, and Cody and I narrowly missed out on the podium in 2022. We are thrilled to have won a medal for Hong Kong this time. We have dedicated so much of our lives to this sport, and it is incredibly rewarding to see our hard work pay off with such a special result.”

The Asian Games showcased many of Hong Kong’s emerging stars on Asia’s biggest sporting stage. Yandy Shek produced a spirited performance in the Women’s Singles, narrowly losing 7-5, 6-3 in the Second Round to World No. 90 and fifth seed Thailand’s Mananchaya Sawangkaew. In Mixed Doubles, 18-year old Kai Thompson partnered with Eudice Chong to reach the Quarter-finals, where they were defeated by Japanese duo Shuko Aoyama and Yusuke Kusuhara, who went on to become finalists of the event.

Michael Cheng, President of the Hong Kong, China Tennis Association, said, “The performances of Team Hong Kong, China at the Asian Games have made me and everyone at the HKCTA extremely proud. Achieving a record-breaking medal haul for Hong Kong tennis at the Asian Games is a testament to the determination and fighting spirit of our players, the dedication of our coaching team, and the success of our pathway in developing local players for the international stage.

Both Eudice and Cody have been in excellent form this year, reaching career-high doubles rankings of No. 57 and No. 145 respectively. Their success at the Asian Games is a testament to years of hard work, dedication and the strong partnership they have built together while pursuing success on the international stage. I offer my wholehearted congratulations to both players and am delighted to see them serving as such positive role models for our younger generation of tennis players.

As for the Gold Medal in Men’s Singles, it means more than a place in the record books. For decades, Hong Kong tennis has not come close to a podium finish in Men’s Singles until four years ago in Hangzhou when Coleman reached the Quarter-finals as a teenager ranked 478th in the world. Today, as the Top Seed and an ATP Top 100 player, he stands on the biggest stage in Asian tennis. Coleman’s trajectory reflects years of sustained investment in Hong Kong’s junior development pathway finally bearing fruit.

The two medals arrive at a pivotal juncture for tennis in Hong Kong, as we seek to maintain our Tier A sport status. That elite funding is not a luxury — it is essential to player development. Performance at the Asian Games represents a key benchmark for the HKCTA’s continued support from the Hong Kong Sports Institute and the Culture, Sports and Tourism Bureau, and today, our athletes have delivered on that benchmark.”

Ronnie Cheng, Manager of Team Hong Kong and Vice President of the Hong Kong, China Tennis Association, said, “We are thrilled by the great performance of our athletes at the Asian Games and the incredible team spirit displayed throughout the week. Our players have supported one another both on and off the court, with our more experienced athletes playing an important role in mentoring and guiding our younger talents during the competition.

I would like to extend my heartfelt congratulations to all of our players who represented Hong Kong, China at the Asian Games – Eudice, Cody, Adithya, Yandy, Kallista, Vienna, Coleman, Kai, Tsz Fu, Nicholas, Walter and Jack. Together with our coaching team and support staff, they have all contributed to this definitive milestone through their dedication, professionalism and commitment to the team. I would also like to thank Hong Kong supporters for their unwavering support and encouragement, which have been a tremendous source of motivation for our athletes throughout their journey.

We are deeply encouraged and moved by the two medals won and hope these achievements will inspire future generations of young tennis players in Hong Kong to pursue the sport and strive for excellence.”
