Competing exclusively in doubles beginning in 2026, Eudice Chong<\/font><\/a> became the first player from Hong Kong to capture a WTA Tour title earlier this May. Now ranked at a career-high No. 57 in the world after gaining direct entry to the French Open and Wimbledon, she is set to compete in her maiden WTA 1000 event\u20142026 National Bank Open presented by Rogers<\/font><\/a>\u2014together with Spanish world No. 16 Cristina Bucsa<\/font><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chong produced a strong finish last year by claiming a pair of WTA 125 titles at Changsha and Jingshan in addition to reaching the final of the WTA 250 Guangzhou Open alongside Chinese Taipei’s Liang En-Shuo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then, renewing her partnership with Cody Wong<\/font><\/a> at the Prudential Hong Kong Tennis Open 2025, the local duo knocked out top-seeded Eri Hozumi\/Wu Fang-Hsien (JPN\/TPE) in the opener 4-6 6-3 [10-5] before eventual champions Jiang Xinyu\/Wang Yafan (CHN) ousted them 7-6(4) 6-4 in the ensuing round.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Partnering Liang En-Shuo of Chinese Taipei at the start of 2026, Chong won the W75 Nonthaburi and the WTA 125 Manila<\/font><\/a> in the month of January. At the end of February, they reached the WTA 250 ATX Open final<\/font><\/a> in Texas before falling against No. 1 seed Storm Hunter\/Taylor Townsend (AUS\/USA) in straight sets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Townsend and Hunter have spent 8 and 12 weeks respectively as the No. 1-ranked doubles player in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In May, Chong became first player from Hong Kong to win a WTA Tour doubles title when she partnered Belgium’s Magali Kempen<\/font><\/a> to beat top seed Vera Zvonareva and Aldila Sutjiadi 6-3 2-6 [10-6] to lift the WTA 250 Morocco Open<\/font><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Zvonareva has 17 career doubles titles, including two US Opens, an Australian Open, Indian Wells, and Miami, while Sutjiadi has seven.  The pair had also combined to win the WTA 500 Bad Homburg title this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The following week, Chong and Veronika Erjavec<\/font><\/a> gained direct entry to Roland Garros at the eleventh hour as first alternates. The Hong Kong-Slovenian duo capitalised on the opportunity and knocked out No. 12 seed Storm Hunter\/Caty McNally (AUS\/USA) 6-2 1-6 6-3 en route to the third round before Shuko Aoyama\/Liang En-Shuo (JPN\/TPE) upended them 6-1 6-3.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was nevertheless a milestone, as no player from Hong Kong had ventured past the second round of the French Open. The only other player to win a round in the maindraw was Patricia Hy, who partnered Sweden’s Catrin Jexell to beat Christiane Jolissaint\/Marcella Mesker (SUI\/NED) 6-4 7-6(3) in 1985.<\/p>\n

The following month at Eastbourne, the traditional warm-up tournament ahead of Wimbledon, Chong teamed up with Indonesia’s Janice Tjen to upset Sara Errani<\/font><\/a>\/Jasmine Paolini<\/font><\/a> (ITA) in the first round 7-6(2) 6-3.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Italians were the Olympic<\/font><\/a> and ITF World Champions in 2024<\/font><\/a>, French Open champions in 2025, and the Billie Jean King Cup winning doubles tandem in 2024 and 2025. In addition, Errani had previously held the world No. 1 ranking, while Paolini was ranked as high as No. 3.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At Wimbledon<\/font><\/a>, Chong gained direct entry to the maindraw again as alternates, this time with new partner, Anastasia Tikhonova<\/font><\/a>. The pair beat Elizabeth Cocciaretto\/Ann Li (ITA\/USA) 6-3 7-6(3) in the opener but fell against No. 7 seed Laura Siegemund\/Vera Zvonareva<\/font><\/a> in straight sets in the ensuing round.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In doing so, Chong is now the only player from Hong Kong to win a round in the maindraw of the ladies’ doubles at SW19.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In July at the WTA 250 Athens Open, Chong, now ranked at a new career-high No. 57, teamed up with Poland’s Katarzyna Piter<\/font><\/a>.  They were seeded 3rd<\/sup> but lost a close one against No. 1 seeded Miyu Kato\/Chan Hao-Ching (JPN\/TPE) in the semis 6-3 3-6 [10-5] after holding a couple of match points in the third set super-tiebreak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While Chong is closing in on Patricia Hy’s<\/font><\/a> all-time WTA doubles ranking high of No. 36 set in 1987, they are the only players from Hong Kong to crack the top 100 since the advent of computerised rankings<\/font><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chong now heads to Toronto for this year’s Canadian Open<\/font><\/a>, her first WTA 1000 event. The HK rep is pairing with Spain’s world No. 16 Cristina Bucsa, who had already won the WTA 500 Merida Open in Mexico and reached the finals of the WTA 1000 Italian Open and WTA 500 Brisbane, in addition to semis at Indian Wells this year alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In singles, Bucsa was runner-up at last year’s Prudential Hong Kong Tennis Open and is currently ranked No. 40 in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She won a bronze medal in women’s doubles at the Paris Olympics in 2024 (w\/Sorribes Tormo) and made the semifinal (w\/ Miyu Kato) at the WTA 250 Prudential Hong Kong Tennis Open that year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chong will be the first player from Hong Kong to compete in the Canadian Open since Patricia Hy accomplished the feat in 1987. That year, Toronto was one of eleven tournaments on the WTA Tour classified as Category 4, the second-highest tier of women’s professional tennis just below the four Grand Slams.
