This year, the Asian Team comprised 12 players—6 boys and 6 girls—from seven different countries across Asia, including Hong Kong’s Lena Lin and Wong Him, who toured Europe together for four intensive weeks.

The International Tennis Federation (ITF) organises touring teams to various continents each year, such as Europe and North America, for the 14U, 16U, and 18U age groups. The 14U touring teams to Europe are specifically designed to give talented young players from under-represented regions valuable experience in high-level international competition. These programmes are about much more than just playing matches; they are key development initiatives led by the ITF Grand Slam Player Development Programme that help players adapt to competing abroad, build team camaraderie, and lay the groundwork for a professional career.

The team began their journey with a training camp in Paris before competing in a series of premier Tennis Europe U14 events across France, Germany, and Belgium. The itinerary included the Open Stade Français, U14 d’Annecy, the International German U14 Championships in Duren, and the Young Championship Cup in Wilrijk.

Among the notable results, Korean player Kim Seohyeon had a dominant run, winning three consecutive singles titles, including the prestigious Super Category event in Duren, without dropping a single set.
For Wong Him and Lena Lin, representing Hong Kong as part of the ITF Touring Team in Europe was an exceptional opportunity and an invaluable learning experience.

Competing in some of the continent’s strongest 14U events gave them the chance to test themselves against outstanding international players, experience the demands of elite junior competition, and learn what it takes to perform beyond their comfort zone.

As the saying goes, “In order to become the best, you have to compete against the best.” The road to high performance requires more than talent; it demands the courage to measure yourself against the world’s strongest players, learn from every match, and return more motivated, resilient, and prepared.

The tour experience goes well beyond the tennis court. Recognising that young athletes need more than just technical training, the coaches prioritised holistic development through team-building activities and deliberate communication practice.

These efforts helped players forge strong friendships, sharpen their English skills, and build a tight-knit support system—all of which are critical for navigating the emotional and mental challenges of competing abroad week after week. By incorporating social activities like conversational board games into their daily routines, the staff created a supportive environment where players could decompress and connect despite coming from different cultural backgrounds.

Ultimately, the ITF 14U Touring Team to Europe is a carefully designed programme that accelerates a player’s growth by providing them with the competition, coaching, and life experience needed to pursue a future in professional tennis. Participation in these tours is often a career-defining moment for young players, and the alumni list is a testament to its success.

The programme has helped launch the careers of many top professionals, including Grigor Dimitrov, Sebastian Baez, Ons Jabeur, Zheng Qinwen, and Jelena Ostapenko. In fact, many future Grand Slam champions and World No. 1 players like Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, and Iga Swiatek gained crucial early experience competing in ITF World Junior Tennis competitions that are a key part of this pathway.

Reflecting on the impact of the tour, Ahmed El Menshawy, Head of Performance at the Hong Kong, China Tennis Association, noted the long-term value of the trip. “For Him and Lena, this tour was not simply about results. It was about exposure, development, independence, professionalism, and building the belief that they belong on this stage. These experiences will help shape them as players and people as they continue their journey as two of Hong Kong’s promising rising stars,” El Menshawy said.

“We are proud of the commitment and character they showed throughout the tour. This is an important step forward and only the beginning,” he added.

Wong Him: “I am honoured to have been a member of the GSPDP/ITF/ATF 14U Team to Europe in 2026. Over the past month, I not only had the chance to train and compete on clay courts, a surface I rarely get to play on, but I also learned so much from playing against high-level players.”

“However, the biggest takeaway for me was my first time travelling to Europe entirely on my own. I had to handle everything by myself—the unfamiliar environment, weather, coaches, teammates, and courts—all of it was completely new. This experience gave me a real taste of what it feels like to be a full‑time professional player, and it was truly invaluable,” he added.

Wong competed in four tournaments across Europe—Open Stade Français, Tennis Europe U14 d’Annecy, Internationale Deutsche Tennismeisterschaften, and Antwerp Young Champions Cup in Belgium.

“Among the opponents I faced, the one I admire most is Pato Alvarez. He is Mexico’s top-ranked U14 player, and I played against him in both singles and doubles. He has a complete game – his forehand, backhand, and serve are all impressive. What stood out to me was his attitude. He stays humble in victory and resilient in defeat. We’ve even become good friends.”

“Beyond the matches, I learned a great deal about teamwork and supporting one another, as well as how to stay positive on court whether winning or losing. Since training in Hong Kong is mostly on hard courts and I had very little clay court experience before this trip, I feel that my improvement on this surface has been especially significant.”

“I am deeply grateful to every teammate and coach for their support. We worked together as a team and fought hard in every match.”

“To be honest, I lost my opening matches in both singles and doubles during the first two weeks, which left me filled with self-doubt and a heavy heart. I kept questioning whether I was truly capable of achieving my dreams. I am immensely thankful for the encouragement and support from my coaches, teammates, and family. Because of them, I performed far better in the following two weeks.”

“At our final team meeting on the last night, the coaches told us that we must give them a big hug the next time we meet. Everyone in the room was deeply moved, and we were all close to tears.”

Lena Lin: “I competed in the Tennis Europe U14 European Tour as a member of Team Asia over this one-month overseas campaign, receiving professional guidance and support from the coaching staff of Team Asia throughout the journey.”tournaments in total, with the results broken down as follows:

Open Stade Français: Singles reached the Round of 32, Doubles advanced to the Round of 16

Tennis Europe U14 Annecy Tournament: Singles made the Round of 16, Doubles fell in the third round

Internationale Deutsche Tennismeisterschaften U14 (Kreis Düren): Suffered first-round exits in both Singles and Doubles

Antwerp Young Champions Cup: Secured a semi-final finish in the Bonus Draw, while Doubles was eliminated in the second round.”

“This month-long European tour has brought me profound growth that extends far beyond technical improvements on court. Travelling and competing independently has greatly fostered my self-reliance. I have mastered the art of thorough pre-match preparation, cultivated greater patience and tactical composure on slow clay courts, and sharpened my instinct to move forward and dictate points by approaching the net more aggressively.”

“While my overall tournament results fell short of my expectations, this invaluable experience has proven incredibly transformative. Observing elite peer competitors and reflecting deeply on my defeats has become the most precious takeaway from the trip. I now have a clear roadmap of the technical and mental areas I need to refine and strengthen. I am fully confident that with targeted, consistent training, I will deliver far stronger performances in my upcoming competitions.”

Players from Hong Kong who received an invitation to the ITF Asian 14 & Under Touring Team to Europe in the past included Jack Hui (1999), Ryan Cheung (2005), Justin To (2007), Kelvin Lam (2008), Katherine Ip (2009), Cody Wong (2016), Jenny Wong (2016), and Richie Choi (2024).

GSPDP/ITF/ATF 14U Team to Europe 2026

Boys
Puneet Manohar (India)
Ethan Jake Frans (Indonesia)
Wong Him (Hong Kong)
Punnapat Nimnuankul (Thailand)
Muhamad Eyad Saleem (Syria)
Mingeon Choi (Korea)

Girls
Srishti Kiran (India)
Kim Seohyeon (Korea)
Lena Lin (Hong Kong)
Padmapriya Ramesh Kumar (India)
Kim Tae Hee (Korea)
Aiym Kanagatova (Kazakhstan)

Coaches
Radhika Kanitkar (India)
Roland Kraut (Philippines)
Ranil Harshana (Sri Lanka)

["post-91436","news-detail","type-news-detail","status-publish","hentry

Lena Lin, Wong Him return from European tour - Hong Kong, China Tennis Association

<meta property="og:description" content="This global initiative GSPDP/ITF/ATF 14U Team to Europe, brings together players from different continents to form regional teams.
