Wednesday, January 13: In-form Jack Wong had an easier than expected passage into the quarterfinals at the Hong Kong ITF Junior Tournament when his opponent Lo Yi-jui from Chinese-Taipei retired without hitting a ball.
Wong, the second seed, had begun the tournament defeating Giritaran Devendiran of Singapore 6-3, 7-6(3) and his comfortable entry into the last eight is likely to give him the upper hand against his next opponent – the winner of the match between sixth-seeded John Otico of the Philippines and Hsu Ting-tao of Chinese-Taipei.
Wong who reached the final of the Shenzhen ITF Juniors last week is not the only Hong Kong player to advance to the quarterfinals. Top seed Anthony Tang and third seed Lam Ching also moved smoothly into the last eight.
Tang defeated Dac Tien Nguyen of Vietnam 6-1, 6-3 while Lam beat Chen Yu-feng of Chinese-Taipei 6-0, 6-3.
In the girl’s competition also at Victoria Park, Hong Kong is assured of at least one entrant in the quarterfinals after Jenny Wong Hoi-ki and Claudia Ng Hei-ching were set to meet each other in the second round.
