Hong Kong players are currently staging on a month-long bonanza of international tennis as Hong Kong hosts four ITF Women’s events – the Hong Kong ITF Women’s Circuit Series – at Victoria Park Tennis Centre.
The four-tournament Series served up a perfect wrap to a sensational year for tennis in Hong Kong with the hosting of the second edition of the Prudential Hong Kong Tennis Open in October, where former world no.1 Jenela Jankovic lifted the singles trophy. A total of eight local players, four of them on wild cards, took part in the opening round of the 32 draw US$10,000 ITF Pro Circuit Women’s event this week.
Former Junior ITF No.35 Katherine IP was the only local player to profit in the first round of the singles event as she defeated Japanese qualifier Ramu UEDA 0-6 7-5 6-2. However 2nd seed Tori KINARD of America was proven to strong for her as she ended her singles campaign in the 2nd round with a 6-3 6-4 lost.
NG Kwan Yau and Tiffany WU encountered straight set lost as they were defeated by French player Jennifer ZERBONE 6-0 6-3 and 7th seed TIAN Ran from China 6-1 6-1 respectively. Qualifier Jacqueline LAM also succumbed to Chinese player ZHANG Yukun by 6-0 6-1. Wildcard player Maggie NG was defeated by another Chinese player and 4th seed KANG Jia Qi 6-3 6-4..
Nevertheless there were good news from the doubles event. Alvina LAI and Jacqueline LAM survived from a three set thriller as they progressed to the 2nd round with a 4-6 6-4 [10-7] win over Chinese duo SHAO Yijia and WANG Dan Ni. At the same time Tiffany WU, who partnered with Mihoki MIYAHARA from Japan also managed to march into the 2nd round as they defeated local pairings Maggie NG and Jennifer SHER 6-4 2-6 [10-5].
