Coleman Wong was the big winner at the PTT Asian 14 & Under in Bangkok after he came first in both B14 singles and doubles in successive weeks. On the girls' side, Candy Wai claimed first place in the G14 doubles with Noelle Vanasse Wilbert and Shek Cheuk Ying respectively.
In Week 1, Coleman Wong defeated Maxwell Heward, 6-0, 6-1, in the B14 singles final before teaming up with Ethan Leung for a 7-5, 6-4, win against Max Kwok and Curtis Tan in the doubles final.
Earlier, Maxwell Heward was responsible for the demise of top seed Maximus Jones in the quarterfinals, 6-1, 7-5.
Meanwhile, Ethan Leung finished in 5th place, and Curtis Tan netted 10th position.
Four players from Hong Kong progressed to the G14 singles quarterfinals, but all ended up having to settle for the positional playoffs.
Candy Wai was the top Hong Kong placegetter with a 5th place finish, followed by Chloris Li in 6th, Emily Chan in 7th, and Shek Cheuk Ying in 8th.
First place in the G14 doubles went to second-seeded Candy Wai and Noelle Vanasse Wilbert, who combined to beat Koreans Jang Gio and Kim Yujin in a third set super-tiebreak, 6-3, 2-6, [10-3].
Chloris Li and Shek Cheuk Ying, the No. 1 seed, lost to Jang and Kim in a closely fought semifinal, 6-3, 5-7, [10-4].
Thailand's former number one player and ATP No. 9, Paradorn Srichaphan, presided over the prize presentation ceremony.
Week 2 in Bangkok also saw a number of Hong Kong players garnering Top placings with Coleman Wong beating Slovakia's Kristian Janci, 6-2, 6-1, to claim first place in the B14 singles. He then collaborated with Maxwell Heward to defeat Max Kwok and Curtis Tan for the second time running in the doubles final, 6-3, 5-7, [10-1].
Janci, a wildcard entry, had earlier knocked out top seed Maximus Jones of Thailand in the quarters and then accounted for Curtis Tan in the semis, 6-4, 7-5.
Curtis Tan eventually claimed 3rd position, followed by Max Kwok in 5th, and Ethan Leung in 7th.
In the G14 singles, Chloris Li managed to see off giant killer Honoka Umeda of Japan in the semifinals, 6-3, 0-6, 7-5, but had to settle for second place after a 6-2, 6-3, defeat to Kim Yujin in the final.
Umeda earlier upset top seed Delilah Kuronen of Sweden in the round two and No. 8 seed Candy Wai in the quarterfinals, 6-3, 7-6(3).
In the end, Noelle Vanasse Wilbert claimed 5th place, followed by Candy Wai in 7th, Shek Cheuk Ying in 8th, and Chan Yee Ting in 10th.
In the G14 doubles, Candy Wai claimed first place for the second successive week when she teamed up with Chloris Li to beat Shek Cheuk Ying and Noelle Vanasse Wilbert in the final, 6-2, 6-4.
Travelling coaches for the PTT Asian 14 & Under in Bangkok were Tong Ka Po and Keith Lo.
After first place finishes in the second week of the Kowloon Dairy HK Asian Tennis Junior Series 14&U last year, as well as the recent ones in Bangkok, Coleman Wong now ranks No. 9 on the latest ATF Junior Tennis Tour Rankings.
The ATF Junior Tennis Tour is a series of tournaments hosted by various Asian tennis Federation member nations during the year that offers more competitive opportunities for under-14 players to hone their skills against opponents from other countries before they decide to move on to the ITF Junior Circuit.
