On Day 2 of the Toyota Asian Championships main draw in Bangkok, Thailand, Hong Kong continued to notch up important victories in both singles and doubles.
In singles, two out of Hong Kong’s three remaining singles players moved on to the quarterfinals, with the third losing to the No. 1 seed.
Zhang Ling continued her recent resurgence with a 6-1 6-3 victory over Indonesia’s Shamada Balu and will now take on No. 2 seed Chan Chin Wei in the quarters. Also progressing was junior player Eudice Chong, who recorded an upset victory over No. 7 seed and WTA #424 Nungnadda Waddasuk from Thailand 7-5 6-3. Tiffany Wu fell to No. 1 seed and WTA #206 Nigina Abduraimova from Uzbekistan 6-1 6-1.
After coming through 6-4 6-3 against Thai pair Chanikarn Silakul & Thantitha Suetrong in their first round match, the unseeded pairing of Zhang Ling and Katherine Ip scored an impressive come from behind win over No. 1 seeds Peangtam Plipuech & Nicha Lertpittaksinchai in 3 sets in the quartefinals. Ip and Zhang dropped a close first set 5-7, but were able to hold off their opponents in a tight second set 7-5, before breezing through the match tiebreak 10-1 to record a 5-7 7-5 [10-1] victory and reach the semifinals.
Hong Kong also notched its first main draw men’s win, as Kevin Kung and Andrew li came through a 6-3 5-7 [10-5] match against Alborz Akhavan & Anoosha Shahgholi.
