Regional Mini-Tennis

Mini-Tennis is a very important part of the HKTA Junior Development Programme as it serves to provide an ideal vehicle for the development of foundation tennis skills in young children. Through Mini-Tennis, tennis is introduced to Hong Kong juniors from age five onwards. Other talented juniors around the ages of 8 or 9 with good potential may also join other programmes such as the Hong Kong Stars of the Future, Tennis-For-All Training Scheme and Easy Sports Programme. Depending on their results and progress, juniors will have the opportunity to gain promotion to HKTA Junior Squads.

The Mini-Tennis Promotion Programme, which includes the Primary School Mini-Tennis Promotion Scheme, Regional Mini-Tennis Training Scheme and Open Mini-Tennis Competitions, has proven to be an invaluable and enjoyable starting point for children looking to pick up tennis as an extra-curricular activity.

  • Mini-Tennis is easy and fun
  • Mini-Tennis suits young and old
  • Mini-Tennis can be arranged almost everywhere
  • Mini-Tennis equipment is inexpensive

The more success a beginner has attempting to hit the ball back over the net, the more fun it will be. A reasonable technique will improve the beginner's success rate and thus make the children's time on the court an enjoyable experience. Using the Mini-Tennis concept, most beginners can actually start to have successful rallies - to start relishing the tennis experience.

So what are you waiting for?  Begin with the HKTA's Regional Mini-Tennis Training Programme today!

Background
Mini-Tennis was first introduced to the Hong Kong public in 1984 when HKTA's Development Committee imported the game from England's Lawn Tennis Association (LTA).

The programme has been a stepping-stone for many of Hong Kong's top junior tennis players to better and brighter things in their tennis careers. Over the years, thousands of children have benefited from mini-tennis and progressed further onto various elite training squads.

The idea of using lighter racquets and softer, foam balls on a smaller court, approximately the size of a badminton court, is ideal for young children, especially given the limited space in Hong Kong.

Mini-Tennis is valuable to all ages as an introduction to playing the full-scale game. All the skills used in regulation tennis - flat and top spin groundstrokes, volleys, lobs, serves, etc., can be developed in mini-tennis.

In fact, mini-tennis is an ideal development tool for young players of all abilities. Skills developed on the mini-tennis courts are easily transferable to full size tennis.

In addition to being an enjoyable recreation, mini-tennis is a natural way of spotting aptitude for the game and can be used effectively in talent identification.

Mini-Tennis offers a unique opportunity to attract innumerable new participants and can generate an avenue where parents can actively involve with their children's activities.
