The 'ITF International Tennis Number' or 'ITN' is a standard representing a player’s general level of play. Such an international tennis rating system was developed specifically by the world governing body of tennis to help grow all levels of competitive tennis participation worldwide. While many nations use rankings that they produce on a regular basis at various levels of their national game, national rankings are meaningless when comparing players of different nationalities and regions. It was envisaged that by adopting the ITN, in time, all tennis players in the world could be united under a common rating system that will ultimately help fuel the sport of tennis and, participation in it, to a higher level.

Once players have been rated, they will begin playing competitions. Over time, it will then be necessary, on the basis of matches played, to re-classify the ratings of players on a regular basis. The ITF recognizes that the success of the ITN will be measured by its ability to be implemented at the club and recreational level. With its inherent multitude of benefits, the more the ITN is used as a base for recreational and competitive activities, the more it will grow in popularity and acceptance.
