 10th All China Games Minimize

10th All China Games
Jiangsu, Nanjing
October 6-21, 2005

10th All China GamesThe all-important tennis qualifiers for the men's and women's individual events at the 10th All China Games began on March 18 in Tianjin. All leading Mainland players such Olympic champions Li Ting and Sun Tian-Tian; WTA top-50 players, Li Na, Peng Shuai and Zheng Jie; not to mention top men Sun Peng and Zhu Ben-Qiang; were not exempt from the ACG qualifying and had to contend for a place in the main round proper like everyone else.

Hong Kong's Yu Hiu Tung and Wayne Wong were seeded 9th and 11th respectively for the men's singles qualies, while Tung and Polly Lam Po Kuen were the eighth seeds for the mixed doubles. Polly will also be vying for a coveted maindraw spot in the women's singles but, without being seeded, she would need to win four rounds of matches to reach the last 16 just to guarantee herself a spot.

Qualification for the team events will take place in Jiangsu and Hubei respectively from 20-26 June 2005. The 10th All China Games proper will take place in Nanjing in October 2005.

In all, teams representing the PLA, Beijing, Tianjin, Hunan, Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau, etc., constitute the 23 different provincial teams that total more than 200 competitors in the tennis competition at the 10th ACG tennis qualies this year.

The top 24 finishers in both Men's and Women's Singles qualies will automatically qualify for the main round of the ACG, while the top 12 place getters for the Mixed qualies will also get a direct pass to Nanjing.

At the last All China Games in 2001 held in Guangdong, the territory's very own Melvin Tong and John Hui combined to capture Hong Kong's first-ever ACG medal since its inception in 1959 when they defeated a second-seeded Hubei team that comprised former Chinese number one, Zhu Ben-Qiang, in the Men's Doubles 3rd place playoff to bring home a Bronze Medal.

Four years ago, the Hong Kong men's team finished agonizingly close to a medal in fifth overall, with Wayne Wong winning all but one of his singles rubbers, the lone defeat coming against then National champion and Mainland number one, Beijing's Bruce Li.

Melvin Tong, John Hui, Wayne Wong and Ivan Yeh represented Hong Kong in the men's events at the 9th All China Games, while Tong Ka Po and Polly Lam were the territory's two female reprentatives.

Hosts Guangdong was the overall champion with close to seventy gold medals, followed by Liaoning, PLA, Shanghai and Jiangsu finishing in a tight bunch from second to fifth place. With two golds, two silvers and a bronze, Hong Kong placed 27th overall out of 37 provincial teams at the 9th ACG in 2001.

Historically, All China Games venues have always been either one of three cities: Beijing, Shanghai or Guangdong. However, the State Council approved in early 2001 that "other capable cities and provinces" could now apply to host future ACGs. For the first time in an open application process, five provinces - Liaoning, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Hubei, and Shaanxi - submitted bids to host the 10th All China Games, with Jiangsu eventually winning out for the esteemed right.

The 2005 All China Games is an important timeline, especially for sports authorities in Beijing, since it will be the last significant competition held on the mainland before the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. It signals the last chance to test-run any planned initiatives and contingency operations anticipated for 2008.

The choice of Nanjing as the final round venue could be manifold. However, according to China's official gateway, China.org.cn, it was in October 1910 that the first Chinese national sports meet was held in an effort by the mainland to seek for eventual participation and formal staging rights of the Olympics. The location of that first domestic sport meet was none other than Nanjing.

Nanjing Olympic Tennis CentreThe Nanjing Olympic Centre's Tennis Arena (right) has a seating capacity of 8,000; a construction area spanning 40,000 sq. meters; built at an estimated cost of RMB158 million; and includes a Centre Court, two semifinal courts, 14 outdoor courts, and four indoor courts all located within a waterside setting.
