World No. 25 Jessica Yang (Tennis) was amongst the half dozen names confirmed as the winners of the 2008 HKSI Outstanding Junior Athlete Award (2nd quarter). The objective of this award scheme is to recognize as well as encourage continued sporting excellence from Hong Kong's top junior athletes in both local and international competitions.

HKTA's high performance tennis training program – the talenTGroup – will be conducting an Assessment Day for 14-year-olds or under on August 30 at Shek Kip Mei Park Tennis Courts. In addition, a Talent ID Selection Day for 11-year-olds or under is also scheduled for August 13 at Kowloon Tsai Park.

In spite of the mid-summer heat, a number of Junior NTS and TG players have been actively honing their skills in overseas competition recently. While Abigail Chiu was engaging in USTA-sanctioned tournaments in North America earlier this month, others were taking part in the National 14U & 12U Championships in China.

The annual NTS-TG 2007-08 End of Season Party took place last Saturday at the HKTA Tennis Centre in Kowloon Tsai Park. Aside from pizzas galore, there was a friendly match between TG Hong Kong and TG Kowloon and a doubles match among NTS players before HKTA General Manager, Mrs. Janet Hardisty, presented the awards to the respective winners.

To promote our newly designed adult training courses, we are organizing a few trial days for tennis players at the HKTA Tennis Centre at Kowloon Tsai Park Tennis Courts. After an eventful and promising rookie season that also coincided with UW's return to the NCAA Championships for the first time since 2005, freshman Venise Chan (Washington) was voted by the Conference coaches to the Pac-10 Women's Tennis All-Conference Second Team, it was announced on www.pac-10.org earlier on June 4.

In an unprecedented effort, the collaboration of the local tennis community has raised in excess of a quarter of a million dollars at the "Tennis For Sichuan" charity event organized by the HKTA and the Coaches Development Committee led by Chairman Derek Ling last Sunday. However, kudos must go to all the players, coaches, helpers, and especially the Chinese Recreation Club, South China Athletic Association, and the Craigengower Cricket Club for providing the tennis facilities for the occasion. The objective of this scheme is to recognize as well as to encourage sporting excellence by Hong Kong's top junior athletes in both local and international competitions.

The Hong Kong Tennis Association is organizing a tennis fundraiser this Sunday (June 1) to help contribute to the relief effort in the aftermath of the 8.0 earthquake that struck Sichuan on May 12.  Hong Kong's top coaches, as well as a number of former and current tennis professionals, will join in with the endeavour. All donations collected via HKTA "Tennis For Sichuan" shall go towards the Hong Kong Red Cross China Relief Fund.

In the opening round of the NCAA Division I Championships, Martin Sayer (Radford) tussled with No. 8 seed Alex Clayton (Stanford) for three sets before going down, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, while Venise Chan (Washington) was caught off guard by the swirling conditions as well as the moon-balling strategy of 24th-ranked Reka Zsilinszka (Duke) in a 6-2, 7-5 setback.
