Martin gives Hong Kong momentous 1-0 lead against Indo

Huge forehands and mental resilience won the day, as Martin Sayer beat opposing number one, Elbert Sie, 6-0, 6-4, 7-6(4), in the opening singles of the Davis Cup A/O Zone Group II first round tie against Indonesia in Jakarta earlier Friday. A total of four rain delays meant the second singles between Goran Bosalevski and Christopher Rungkat has been postponed to 10am (local time) Saturday, with the ensuing doubles scheduled for 1pm.

Mirza returns to win decisive doubles against Hong Kong

It was a dramatic ending to the Fed Cup by BNP Paribas Asia/Oceania Zone Group I Relegation Playoff in Bangkok last weekend, as Zhang Ling (WTA 412) and Jessica Yang (ITF 49) held three set points in the twelfth game of the opening set against Sania Mirza (WTA 29) and Sunitha Rao (193) before the Indians eventually took the deciding doubles, 7-6(6), 6-2.  The territory will be competing in Asia/Oceania Zone Group II in 2009.

Jessica YangAgainst all odds, Jessica Yang gave Hong Kong a 1-0 lead against Chinese Taipei at the 2008 Fed Cup by BNP Paribas A/O Zone Group I event when she shocked Chan Chin-Wei (WTA 202) in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4. However, Chan Yung-Jan (WTA 64) won both her singles and doubles points to eventually power them to a 2-1 win. HK next plays Uzbekistan in the final Group B match on Friday.

Opening losses for Taiwan, HK, India, and New Zealand

Host Thailand, led by its top player Tamarine Tanasugarn, defeated Hong Kong 3-0 earlier on Wednesday at the start of the round robins at the 2008 Fed Cup by BNP Paribas Asia/Oceania Zone Group I event. Meanwhile, India and Chinese Taipei suffered unexpected opening day setbacks that could well cost them a place in the playoffs. HK is slated to face the Taiwanese in a Group B match first thing Thursday.

HK to face host Thailand in 2008 Fed Cup opener

Following the official draw, Hong Kong has been placed in Group B together with Chinese Taipei, Thailand, and Uzbekistan for the 2008 Fed Cup by BNP Paribas Group I Asia/Oceania Zone event in Bangkok this week. The trio of Zhang Ling, Jessica Yang, and Lam Po Kuen will take on host Thailand first up Wednesday morning at the LTAT National Tennis Development Centre.

Hong Kong Tennis Champions Cup 2008 begins today

A full weekend of tennis up ahead is expected to commence today at the Hong Kong Tennis Champions Cup 2008 in Association with Mangrove West Coast, and hosted by the Clearwater Bay Golf & Country Club, as defending men's singles champion, Wayne Wong, is slated to open proceedings in a Blue Group round robin match against Sean Cooper, while Goran Bosalevski will take on 2007 runner-up Yu Hiu Tung in a Red Group contest.

Indonesia blanked by Thailand in SEAG men's team final

At the 24th SEA Games in Thailand, the top-seeded Thai team led by Danai Udomchoke blanked No. 2 Indonesia, 3-0, in the men's team final earlier on Sunday to claim gold. The Indonesians had 17-year-old Christopher Rungkat (ATP 1342, ITF 62) playing number two singles and the doubles together with veteran Suwandi Suwandi.

Udomchoke beats Motomura to win inaugural Asia Cup

Thai No. 1 seed Danai Udomchoke (ATP 155) defeated fourth-seeded Japanese veteran, Gouichi Motomura, 6-2, 6-1, to win the inaugural US$100,000 LG Asia Cup held at the LTAT National Tennis Centre in Nonthaburi earlier on Sunday. Udomchoke picks up a winners cheque in the amount of US$30,000 as champion of the Asia Cup.

Zhang LingAt the C25 Pune over the weekend, Zhang Ling was defeated by No. 8 seed, Isha Lakhani of India, 1-6, 6-4, 6-1, in the semifinals. However, she made amends by teaming up with Thailand's Varatchaya Wongteanchai to win the doubles by overcoming a one-set deficit against wildcard entries Wynne Prakusya and Angelique Widjaja, 1-6, 7-5, [10-5].

Zhang Ling advances to C25 Pune quarterfinals

At the US$25,000 ITF Women's Circuit event in Pune, India, Zhang Ling defeated Katarina Polunina in the second round when the Ukrainian had to retire when trailing 6-3, 3-0. In the doubles, Zhang Ling teamed up with Varatchaya Wongteanchai of Thailand to oust No. 3 seed Rushmi Chakravarthi and Isha Lakhani of India, 7-6(0), 6-3.
