Hong Kong Life Presents: Tennis Stars of the Future 2008 concluded in grand style last Sunday at Kowloon Tsai Park, where a Pro-Celeb Tennis Classic, won by Kevin Cheng and Yu Hiu Tung, took place prior to the eagerly awaited prize presentation, especially for those youngsters who turned in good performances during the year-end Stage V Competitions.

Coinciding with the Hong Kong Tennis Foundation's 20th Anniversary, raffle tickets are now on sale until November 3. Aside from a range of fabulous prizes to be won, you will also be part of an on-going endeavour to raise much-needed funds for the development of junior tennis right here in Hong Kong.

Earlier this summer, Kelvin Lam was a member of the ITF/Asian 14U Team that went on a five-week European Tour involving ETA-sanctioned tournaments spread across France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. Other notables that took part in some of these events include Europe's top three-ranked 14U players – Evgeny Karlovskiy (RUS), Julien Cagnina (BEL), and Liam Broady (GBR).

Earlier this summer, a number of NTS players have been busy crossing swords with other leading juniors in Asia when they took part in Comps 7 & 8 of the China National 14U Championships in Beijing, in addition to the Philippines and Malaysian legs of the ATF 14 & Under Series in Manila and Kuching respectively.

World No. 25 Jessica Yang (Tennis) was amongst the half dozen names confirmed as the winners of the 2008 HKSI Outstanding Junior Athlete Award (2nd quarter). The objective of this award scheme is to recognize as well as encourage continued sporting excellence from Hong Kong's top junior athletes in both local and international competitions.

Earlier last week, the NCAA Division I's Big South unveiled its Top-25 "Best of the Best" moments in League history to kickoff the Conference's 25th Anniversary celebration ahead of the upcoming 2008-09 season. Martin Sayer (Radford) is the sole active sportsperson, and the only men's tennis player, selected as one of the Conference's best since 1983.

In spite of the mid-summer heat, a number of Junior NTS and TG players have been actively honing their skills in overseas competition recently. While Abigail Chiu was engaging in USTA-sanctioned tournaments in North America, others were taking part in the National 14U & 12U Championships up north in China.

The annual NTS-TG 2007-08 End of Season Party took place last Saturday at the HKTA Tennis Centre in Kowloon Tsai Park. Aside from pizzas galore, there was a friendly match between TG Hong Kong and TG Kowloon and a doubles match among NTS players before HKTA General Manager, Mrs. Janet Hardisty, presented the certificates and awards to this past season's respective winners.

In an unprecedented effort, the collaboration of the local tennis community has raised in excess of a quarter of a million dollars at the "Tennis For Sichuan" charity event organized by the HKTA last Sunday. However, kudos must go to all the players, coaches, helpers, and especially the Chinese Recreation Club, South China Athletic Association, and the Craigengower Cricket Club for providing the tennis facilities for the occasion.
