Back Out of Town - Murray Bennetto Revisited

Originally offered a six-month deal to cover for Hy Ny at LRC, former local resident Murray Bennetto's six months in the concrete jungle turned into sixteen-plus years, a stint which saw him work with a number of leading local juniors at the Sports Institute, as well as being part of the Davis Cup set-up, and coaching positions at several prominent clubs here in HK.
Last year, Murray moved back to his hometown of Vernon in British Columbia, Canada, together with his wife and two young children to answer to his calling in the real estate business. Tennishk.org conversed with him on his many fond tennis memories during his time here in Hong Kong.

Martin bows to No. 7 seed KC Corkery of Stanford at ITA Nat'l Indoors

At the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships in Columbus, Ohio, Hong Kong's Martin Sayer advanced to the second round by defeating Daniel Byrnes, of Oklahoma State, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3, but was denied a place in the quarterfinals by Stanford number one and seventh seed, KC Corkery, 6-2, 6-4.
Corkery is the nation's ninth-ranked player and the 2004 NCAA Doubles Champion. He booked his spot at the National Indoors by beating U of Washington's Alex Slovic to win the Wilson/ITA Northwest Regionals. The Stanford number one had held a career-high ATP Ranking of 493 in October 2003.

The Hong Kong duo of Brian Hung and Lam Po Kuen took out No. 7 seeds, Raffaella Bindi (WTA No. 452) and Marco Crugnola (ATP No. 606) of Italy, 6-3, 6-3, to progress to the mixed doubles quarterfinals at the 23rd Summer Universiade in Izmir, Turkey, but were stopped short of semifinal berth, and hence a bronze medal, when they were upended by number one seeds, Chen Ti and Chuang Chia-Jung, of Chinese Taipei 6-4, 6-2, in a late finishing match last night. At the 23rd Summer Universiade in Izmir, Turkey, Jack Hui and Brian Hung defeated the Thai pairing of Weerapat Doakmaiklee and Kirati Siributwong, 7-5, 7-5, to advance to a third round date with No. 1 seeds, Artem and Dmitri Sitak, of Russia while the territory's other representative, Lam Po Kuen, was stopped short of a place in the third round of the women's singles when she was upended in straight sets by eighth-seeded world No. 322, Lauren Breadmore, of Australia.

The Hong Kong Boys' 16U team of Ambrose Wong, Ko Ka Chun, and Ryan Cheung were unfortunately unable to qualify for this year's Junior Davis Cup 2005 finals, as the local trio were no match for some of Asia Oceania's most seasoned 16U ITF World Junior Circuit players, with top seeds Australia boasting world No. 87, Patrick Nicholls, and second-seeded eventual winner, Japan, showing No. 67 Kei Nishikori. The top-four seeded nations - Australia, Japan, Philippines and Thailand - qualified for the September World Finals in Barcelona, Spain.

At the 2005 Fed Cup Asia/Oceania Zone Group I Zonal ties in Delhi over the weekend, China won both singles rubbers in straight sets against Australia, as Li Na's replacement, Sun Tian-Tian, fended off Evie Dominikovic, 6-3, 7-5, before world No. 69, Zheng Jie, defeated the 55th-ranked Samantha Stosur, 6-3, 6-4, to establish an unassailable 2-0 lead to send China into July's World Group II Playoffs.
