Three turned out to be an unlucky number for Hong Kong representatives at the 4th East Asian Games in Macau, as Yu Hiu Tung and Lam Po Kuen both lost in the quarterfinals to the men's and women's third seeds respectively in the singles draw, while the Wayne Wong-Yu Hiu Tung pairing also went out in the round of eight to men's doubles No. 3 seeds, Liu Tai-Wei and Lee Hsin-Han, of Taiwan in straight sets.
Tung went down 6-2, 6-2, against number three seed, Kwon Oh-Hee, of Korea while Polly, world ranked 776th, was defeated by Japanese third seed, Junri Namigata, 6-2, 6-3, in a long, drawn-out baseline duel.
Kwon, world ranked 354th, will face top seed and world No. 98, Wang Yeu-Tzuoo, for a place in the final after the Taiwanese number one came from a set down to fend off Japan's Tasuku Iwami, 2-6, 6-1, 6-2. In other quarterfinal results, fourth seed Toshihide Matsui got past Oyunbat Bataar of Mongolia, and will face Korea's Lee Seung-Hoon in the semifinals, who upset men's second seed and world No. 262, Chen Ti, of Taiwan, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.
Lee, ranked as high as No. 391 last November, had dropped down to a current number of 1542 after playing only three tournaments since the AIG Japan Open back in October 2004.
On the other hand, "Jimmy" Wang Yeu-Tzuoo had been in fine form this year. Not only did he beat Fabrice "The Wizard" Santoro and former world number two, Tommy Haas, in the second round of the Thailand Open (won by Roger Federer), the Saudi-born Taiwanese Davis Cupper also took over the Asian number two spot, for so long occupied by Korean Lee Hyung-Taik, to trail only perennial No. 1, Paradorn Srichaphan, in this region's pecking order.
This year alone, Wang Yeu-Tzuoo had already bagged two Challenger titles (Ho Chi Minh City and Istanbul) while reaching the finals of two others. He also reached the quarterfinals of the aforementioned Thailand Open before falling to world No. 30, Jarkko Nieminen, 6-4, 6-7(3), 6-4, and for good measure, capturing the Spain F13 Futures by beating reigning World University Games champion, Artem Sitak, in the final.
In the women's semis, the third-seeded Junri Namigata took the opening set against No. 2 seed, Chan Chin-Wei, of Taiwan but could not sustain the momentum, as the Kaohsiung native came back strong to take the encounter, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5. In the top half of the draw, number one seed and world 202, Chan Yung-Jan, dished out a double-bagel beating to Chinese fourth seed, Sun Sheng-Nan, to make it an all-Taiwan women's singles gold medal game later today.
In the men's doubles quarterfinal, Taiwanese third seeds Liu Tai-Wei and Lee Hsin-Han ended any medal hopes for the territory, as they sent Wayne Wong and Yu Hiu Tung packing in rapid-fire fashion, winning the contest, 6-2, 6-3, in a mere forty-eight minutes. Liu and Lee then fell to second seeds, Kwon Oh-Hee and Kim Dong-Hyun of Korea in the ensuing semis, 7-6, 5-7, 7-5. Fourth seeds, An Jae-Sung and Kwon Hyung-Tae, made sure the doubles gold medal will have a Korean name on it, as they defeated Japanese top seeds, Tasuku Iwami and Toshihide Matsui, in the other final four match-up, 6-4, 6-4.
In the mixed doubles semifinals, Taiwanese second seeds Chang Kai-Lung and Chan Chin-Wei easily dealt with No. 3 seeds, Lyoo Mi and Kim Dong-Hyun, of Korea 6-2, 6-1, to advance to the gold medal game against fellow teammates and top seeds, Yi Chu-Huan and Chuang Chia-Jung, who saw off unseeded Jina Lee and Suk Hyun-Joon of Korea 6-4, 6-1, in less than 45 minutes.
Quarterfinals of the women's doubles saw third seeds Mayumi Yamamoto and Tomoko Yonemura taken to a deciding set by Huang I-Shuan and Chan Chin-Wei of Taiwan before the Japanese pair won in three sets, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3, while top seeds Chan Yung-Jan and Chuang Chia-Jung progressed to a semifinal meeting with Chinese fourth seeds, Han Xin-Yun and Ji Chun-Mei.
