Whi Kim, Geraldine Leong crowned SCAA Open 2005 champions
By Andy Yanne @ 11:09 AM :: 2017 Views ::

Whi KimUnseeded former University of Arizona number one, Whi Kim, defeated No. 6 seed and the territory's third-ranked junior, Ronald Chow, 6-2, 2-6, 6-3, Sunday to win the SCAA Open 2005 Men's Singles title, while 14-year-old Geraldine Leong captured her first local major when her fellow teenaged opponent, Sher Chun Wing, had to retire in the third set of the Ladies' Singles final.

Previously holding an ATP Ranking of No. 1004 back in November 2003, Whi Kim did it the hard way by winning three successive three-setters, as he eliminated No. 4 seed Adrian Montesinos, 7-5, 4-6, 6-3, in the quarterfinals and No. 5 Michael Lai, 6-7(0), 6-2, 7-6(3), in a third set tiebreak in the semis before the title game.

Ronald Chow, currently ranked at No. 178 on the ITF World Junior Circuit and a member of the full-time programme at HKSI, did well by reaching his first local major final after seeing off two former touring pros – second seed Andrew Town, 6-4, 6-0, in the quarterfinals and Goran Bosalevski, 6-2, 2-6, 6-3, in the semis.

Another HKSI full-time player, 16-year-old Gilbert Wong, also posted some good results when he came from a set down to upset top seed, Giovanni Muratore, 6-7(5), 6-3, 6-2, in round one, followed by a three-hour, come-from-behind win over former three-time Carnegie Mellon MVP, Andrew Lee, 6-7(4), 6-2, 6-4, in the round of sixteen.

Whi Kim then made it title number two when he partnered Lorraine Cheung to defeat third-seeded Andrew Lee & Monique Cheung, 6-4, 7-6(3), in the Mixed Doubles final.

The men's doubles went to Aussie No. 2 seeds, Andrew Town & Adrian Montesinos, when they defeated last year's winning combo and top seeds Sean Cooper & Malcolm Swan in the final, 7-6(9), 6-3. Earlier in the semis, Town and Montesinos saw off fourth-seeded Jason Sankey and Graeme Foster, 1-6, 6-3, 6-3, while in a repeat of last year's final, Cooper & Swan got past Giovanni Muratore & Todd Johnsen, 6-4, 6-2.

In an all-teenager Ladies' Singles final between two 14-year-olds, Geraldine Leong scooped up her first local major when her fellow Hong Kong World Junior Tennis representative, Sher Chun Wing, had to retire when trailing, 6-4, 4-6, 3-2.

Geraldine, who bagged both Chairman's Cup Ladies' Singles & Doubles titles last year at the SCAA Open, was surprisingly unseeded for this one. The reigning CRC Open School Girls' champion did not drop a set until the final, as she defeated Hui Wing Ki, Evelina Leung, and Sher Pui Wing in the opening three rounds in straight sets.

The Ladies' Doubles title went to unseeded Maggie Lin & Evelina Leung, as they defeated No. 3 seeds, Geraldine Leong & Sher Chun Wing, 6-2, 2-6, 6-4, in the quarterfinals; No. 2 seeds and reigning HK National Junior champions, Sarah Fowler & Monique Cheung, 6-0, 6-4, in the semis; and then 2005 HK National finalists, Amy Wong & Vivian Man, in the final 5-7, 6-4, 6-2.

Elsewhere, in the Chairman's Cup, No. 4 seed Kevin Kung won the Men's Singles title when he saw off fellow teenager and third seed, Gary Yam, 6-4, 4-6, 6-0, in the final, while the Men's Doubles went to third-seeded Ivan Li & Gary Yam after the loss of a mere two games, 6-2, 6-0, against No. 2 seeds Lau Wing Cheong & Chan Kam Ming.

Current HK under-14 girls' number one, Ki Yan Tung, just missed out on a 'double' after losing to top seed Chan Tsz Ling in the Chairman' Cup Ladies' Singles final, 7-5, 7-6(3), as she had earlier won the Ladies' Doubles by teaming up with Wu Ho Ching to beat No. 4 seeds, Katherine Ip & Shene Pui Yee, 6-3, 5-7, 7-5.
