A red-hot Hu Bing shocked two-time defending champion and No. 1 seed, Yu Hiu Tung, in the final, 6-4, 6-0, to capture the coveted Men's Singles crown at the CRC Open 2003 last Sunday, thus spoiling Yu's attempt to become the first player to win three straight CRC Open titles since Englishman Michael Walker bagged four straight from 1988 to 1991. Hu Bing, who is currently a coach with HKTA's Talent Group, went home with a winner's purse of HK$24,000 and a packaged trip to Guam, courtesy of Guam Visitors Bureau.
Elsewhere, top seed Jackie Fu and Tong Ka Po captured their second Ladies' Doubles title in three years when they defeated the second-seeded teenage pair of Venise Chan and Kathy Lo, 6-2, 6-1, in the final. The experienced team of Fu and Tong, both former representatives of the Hong Kong Fed Cup team, also won the HK National title earlier in April this year, thereby owning two of the three women's doubles local majors of 2003.
