Teenage prodigy, Venise Chan, captured her first CRC Open School Girls' title when she avenged last year's defeat to dispel second-seeded Cindy Lee in the final in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4, yesterday afternoon. The Form 3 secondary school student was also a runner-up in the mixed doubles just last weekend.

The youngest ever School Girls' champion was Joanne Cheung in 1999, at age 13 yrs and 4 months.

Already having a very good year in terms of tennis results and overall achievements, which include securing her first-ever ITF Junior World Ranking points and winning the SCAA Open women's singles crown, Venise will make it a great year if she is to capture the ladies' title here at the CRC Open as well, where she is seeded at No. 2, just behind defending champion and full-time tennis player, Polly Lam.

Other notable results over the weekend at the CRC Open saw top seed Graeme Foster capture the inaugural 35 or Over Men's Singles Championship when he beat Allan Melendez, 6-1, 6-3, in the final.

Melendez needed a deciding super-tiebreak earlier in the second round to overcome a one-set deficit to defeat former Hong Kong doubles No. 1, Venant Shum, 2-6, 6-2, (10-7).

In the School Boys' Doubles final, HKSI scholarship athletes Martin Sayer and Michael Lai, the No. 1 seeds, easily accounted for second seeds Raphael Chan and Jason Tsang, 6-0, 6-1, to win the title. Sayer and Lai had dropped a total of three games en route to the doubles crown.

Michael Lai, seeded second, won his second CRC Open School Boys' Singles title in three years when he beat top seed and teammate, Martin Sayer, in the final, 6-4, 6-3. Lai was the School Boys' champion in 2001.
