Peter Burwash Coaches' Workshop a great hit
By Andy Yanne @ 9:47 AM :: 568 Views ::

Well over 30 privileged local coaches who attended the Peter Burwash Coaches' Workshop, presented by the Coaches Development Committee (CDC) of the HKTA on November 7 at the Aberdeen Marina Club, were fortunate enough to benefit from the knowledge and expertise of renowned tennis guru, Peter Burwash. The workshop also attracted the likes of HKTA President, Mr. Kenneth Tsui; HKTA Honorary Secretary, Mr. Kenneth Ng; and CDC member, Mr. Rob Smith.

Note: Participants are entitled to 4 credit points under the HKTA Coach Licensing Scheme.

Topics on tennis development such as Qualities and Common Denominators of Great Coaches, Myths & Foundations of the Game, and Effective Teaching of Group and Private Lessons were examined in the morning session, while the afternoon session included on-court analysis and demonstration of various strokes pertinent to the modern game, such as the backhand slice, open stance and grip variation.

Peter Burwash is the founder of Peter Burwash International (PBI), a world leader in professional tennis management, running tennis programmes at many of the world's top resorts and clubs. Peter was one of the ATP's original player members, and one of the USPTA's original Master Professional members. He has the distinction of being only one of five coaches to be named an Instructional Editor for the highly respected Tennis Magazine.

Peter's coaching techniques have revolutionised the game and his influence can be seen in millions of players worldwide, from professionals to recreational enthusiasts. Peter and PBI coaches have worked with a number of top players, including Serena and Venus Williams, Greg Rusedski, Olympic Gold Medallist Sebastian Lareau of Canada, world doubles No.1 Leander Paes of India, Paradorn Srichaphan of Thailand, Aranxta Sanchez Vicario, and Amanda Coetzer

The International Tennis Hall of Fame has recently awarded Peter Burwash with its Education Award for his contributions to the game of tennis.

Moreover...

on the invitation of HKTA's Elite Committee, Peter Burwash paid a special visit to the Talent Group training the following day and conducted three-hour clinic at the Sports Institute for some 35 TG kids and 10 coaches in all.

The entire TG team, from the coaches to the players, benefited immensely from the USPTA Master Pro and thoroughly enjoyed the clinic. The coaches also learnt new drills and tricks to correct students' mistakes.

Peter was very impressed with the TG kids and his initial assessment was that all the TG kids are very talented, creative and quick learners. He also commented that they were all very respectful and well-behaved. He thought that training under the Talent Group is on the right track, complimented by a good coaching staff. Peter reinforced a lot of the concepts that have been taught under the Talent Group, such as the importance of consistency and footwork.

And don't forget...

Aussie tennis legend and former Wimbledon Champion, Pat Cash, will be in Hong Kong later this month and will conduct a coaches clinic on November 25. Those who have already signed up for the Peter Burwash Coaches' Workshop can also attend the Pat Cash Coaches' Clinic for free!

Deadline for applications is 17 November 2003. Don't miss out!
