At the Fed Cup by BNP Paribas Asia/Oceania Zone Group II, Hong Kong (3-0) will face Kyrgyzstan (3-0) with a place in Saturday's promotion playoff against either India or Philippines at stake after both teams won their penultimate Pool A round robin tie yesterday.
Hong Kong kept up their unbeaten run in Pool A, sweeping aside Singapore 3-0 on Day Four of the Fed Cup by BNP Paribas Asia/Oceania Zone Group II event.
Perhaps fitting that Thursday was Groundhog Day in China, as Hong Kong's Venise Chan and teammate Zhang Ling blew past their Singapore opponents by identical, 6-0, 6-0, scores in the singles. Singapore spoiled Hong Kong's perfect "trifecta" day by winning one game in the, 6-1, 6-0, doubles loss to Eudice Chong and Jessica Yang.
Hong Kong face Kyrgyzstan on Friday in a winner-takes-all clash.
Kyrgyzstan maintained their perfect start by recording their third straight win, taking down Sri Lanka 3-0 without dropping a set.
Red-hot India, paced by teen phenom Rutjua Bhosale, will be back in action on Friday after a day off today. India’s dramatic rise to the top of Pool B has seen their side lose only one set thus far in the 2012 competition, but their opponent’s tomorrow, Philippines, are also unbeaten.
Philippines faced their own set of challenges this morning, beginning with a pre-match medical withdrawal of second singles player Marian Capadocia with a wrist injury incurred during morning practice. She was replaced by teammate Tamitha Nguyen, who went on to defeat Turkmenistan’s Ummarahmat Hummetova, 6-0, 6-0.
The wheels temporarily came off for Philippines in the second rubber as Anna Clarice Patrimonio dropped a three set scorcher, 7-5, 1-6, 6-2, to Anastasiya Prenko, but Nguyen and Maika Jae Tanpoco steadied the ship by dispatching Hummetova and Prenko, 6-1, 6-0, in the doubles to seal a 2-1 victory.
In Thursday's other Pool B tie, Iran notched their first singles victory of the week when Madona Najarian prevailed, 7-5, 6-0, over Oman’s Maliha Al Awaidy. However, Fatma Al Nabhani easily handled Ghazaleh Torkaman, 6-1, 6-0, to take the tie into a deciding doubles rubber and Oman sealed a 2-1 win courtesy of a routine, 6-1, 6-0, doubles victory for Al Nabhani and Sarah Al Balushi.
