Brian Yeung to face Kevin Wong in all-Hong Kong boys' final
By Andy Yanne @ 8:26 AM :: 283 Views ::

Fourth seed Brian Yeung (ITF 297) and No. 14 Kevin Wong (ITF 515) both secured semifinal wins to set up an all-Hong Kong boys' final on Saturday at the Hong Kong ITF Junior Tournament 2012.

First up, No. 14 seed Kevin Wong went up against Thai sixth seed Chayanon Kaewsuto (ITF 333) who looked flat today after grueling back-to-back three-hour marathons in the previous two rounds.

The HK rep wasted no time in breaking his jaded opponent to love in the second game to jump out to a quick-fire 2-0 lead.

Chayanon, surprisingly, got on the board by breaking back to 2-1. However, Kevin Wong went back to work immediately and embarked on a four game run, and broke his Thai counterpart to love in the final game to win the set, 6-1.

The second set, nevertheless, was one-way traffic, as Chayanon lost his opening two service games to love. Kevin Wong did not face a single break point in the entire match and was forced to deuce on his serve only in the last game of the second set when the No. 6 seed attempted one last stand.

Yet it was merely a temporary delay of the inevitable, as the No. 14 seed bulldozed his way to a one-sided 6-1, 6-0, victory in just 50 minutes.

In his maiden boys' singles final on the ITF Junior Circuit on Saturday, Kevin Wong will go up against regular doubles partner and No. 4 seed Brian Yeung, who overcame a one-set deficit to beat top-seeded Liu Siyu of China, 3-6, 6-1, 6-1.

When cross-examined as to what won him the match, Brian Yeung coolly replied, "All I can say is that my serve was my man today!"

His assessment was spot on, as he threw down a total of fourteen aces, with a dozen of them coming in the second and third sets.

In an eventful opening game of the first set, Liu Siyu managed to save three successive break points from 30-40 down before double faulting to lose serve.

Unfortunately, Brian Yeung was unable to consolidate the service break, as the top seed returned the favour swiftly to level proceedings at one game all.

Servers then dominated the rest of the set until the eighth game when Brian Yeung was broken to 15 before Liu Siyu held comfortably to bag the opener, 6-3.

From the second set onwards, Brian Yeung began to find the mark with his first potent serves. While this directly yielded a number of outright aces, it also instigated shallower, weaker returns, which allowed the No. 4 seed to dictate numerous points from the outset.

Brian Yeung started the turnaround by belting three aces in the opening game to hold serve. After conjuring a further pair of aces to make it 2-1, the HK rep broke his opponent twice in succession and closed out the set with another pair of aces.

Although the top seed was putting a relatively high percentage of first serves into play, unlike Brian Yeung, aces or service winners were scant.

Holding serve was becoming a struggle for Liu Siyu, as the No. 4 seed was returning with purpose and depth. After breaking the Chinese player to 15 in the opening game, Brian Yeung threw down three aces to consolidate the break.

He then broke the top seed to love in the ensuing game before cementing the double break advantage with an ace to register a 4-0 lead.

Both players then held their next service game to rake the score to 5-1 before Brian Yeung pounced again to attain the match-clinching break and concluding the two-hour-five-minute contest, 3-6, 6-1, 6-1.

Saturday's title decider will be Brian Yeung's second career final on the ITF Junior Circuit following his runner-up finish at the Hong Kong Open Junior Championships in 2010.

Meanwhile, over in the girls' singles, Eudice Chong's fine run was finally halted by big-hitting southpaw Zhang Ying in the semifinals, 7-6(4), 3-6, 6-3.

The HK rep had initially established an early advantage and served for the opening set with a 5-2 lead in hand. However, Zhang Ying managed to break back twice to force a tiebreak and won five points in a row from 2-5 down to win it, 7-4.

Although Eudice Chong did well to break Zhang Ying late in the second set to even proceedings at one set apiece, the Mainland player regained her stranglehold in the final set with her potent forehand, which had consistently been causing havoc for the HK rep from start to finish.

Nevertheless, it had been a successful week for Eudice Chong as this was her first semifinal appearance in singles in a Grade 4 event. Later this month, she will be part of the Hong Kong team that will be contesting this year's Fed Cup by BNP Paribas Asia/Oceania Zone Group II Qualifying in Shenzhen.

Earlier on Friday, the girls' doubles title was won by the Chinese duo of Kang Jia Qi and Li Huijie, who defeated the Russian-Finnish combination of Anna Grigoryan and Pernilla Wohlstrom in the final, 6-1, 6-4.
