Eudice Chong sends third seed tumbling out in opening round
By Andy Yanne @ 11:38 PM :: 345 Views ::

While none of the seeded boys were called into action on Day One of the G4 Hong Kong ITF Junior Tournament at Victoria Park, No. 3 seed Efriliya Herlina (ITF 375) of Indonesia was sent packing with a 6-2, 6-4 loss to Eudice Chong (ITF 998) in the first round of the girls' singles.

Draws & Order of Play

Interestingly, Eudice Chong, for the past two years, has drawn the eventual champion in the opening round without fail, opponents who also happened to be one of the top-3 seeded players in the field.

At this event twelve months ago, she went down against 2nd-seeded eventual champion Zhang Yuxuan, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, in round one. In 2010, she drew 3rd-seeded eventual champion Lee Pei-Chi in the opener and won the first set before losing, 6-7(4), 6-0, 6-0.

Besides Eudice Chong, four other local entries also progressed to round two in the girls' draw, with No. 7 seed Carina Ma (ITF 476) blanking Satomi Momose (ITF 1635) of Japan and Venus Pang (ITF 1536) defying the rankings against Finland's Pernilla Wohlstrom (ITF 992) with a 6-2, 6-2 win.

In addition, Maggie Ng (ITF 559) advanced by coming from a set down to beat New Zealander Paige Mary Hourigan (ITF 619) in three sets, 2-6, 7-5, 6-4, while Carmen Lai (ITF 1390) booked her spot in the round of 16 with a 6-4, 6-2 victory against Chinese Taipei's Chin Hsin-Min (ITF 864).

Next up, Carina Ma, the only seeded player from Hong Kong in this year's tournament, will face Russia's Anna Grigoryan (ITF 1037), while Eudice Chong takes on modestly ranked Chu Chih-Hsien (ITF 916) with a place in the quarterfinal at stake.

In the bottom half of the draw, however, players from Hong Kong are expected to face some tough opposition, as Maggie Ng is slated to entertain No. 8 seed Shao Yijia (ITF 493), while Carmen Lai will tee off against second-seeded Maika Jae Tanpoco (ITF 338).

Meanwhile, Venus Pang will go up against No. 6 seed Li Na (ITF 461), conqueror of Hong Kong's Vivian Lin in the opening round on Monday.

Elsewhere in the boys' singles, four local entries managed to survive the opening hurdle to reach round two.

In the top half of the draw, Marco Lam saw off Chinese Taipei's Wu Tunglin in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1, to set up a meeting with No. 12 seed Armando Soemarno of Indonesia, while Andrew Li (ITF 915) defeated another Taiwanese entry Huang Yi-Wei, 7-5, 6-4, to secure a rendezvous with 8th-seeded Thai Singekrawee Wattanakul.

In the opposite bracket, Tommy Lam (ITF 1078) was victorious against yet another player from Chinese Taipei, Hsieh Chao-Ting, 6-0, 6-3, but faces 11th seed Nuradim Ramdani next up. Jonathan Cho (ITF 1078) dropped the first set against Indonesian Jeremy Nahor (ITF 1298) before battling back to secure his place in the last 32 with a 3-6, 7-6(2), 6-2 win.

On Tuesday, all the seeded players will be called into action in the boys' draw, including No. 2 seed Kelvin Lam (ITF 195), No. 4 Brian Yeung (ITF 297), No. 5 Andy Lau (ITF 312), No. 14 Kevin Wong (ITF 515), and No. 16 Ronald Pak (ITF 739).

Seeded first in the boys' singles is Liu Siyu (ITF 98), winner of the G3 in Jiangmen just last week. He is the only top-100 player in this year's field.

In the boys' doubles, Hong Kong's Kelvin Lam and Andy Lau are seeded 2nd, while Brian Yeung and Kevin Wong are the No. 4 seeds.
