Former ATP No. 602 Coenie Van Wyk of South Africa beat top-seeded defending champion Wayne Wong, 6-4, 6-3, to capture the SCAA Open 2010 men's singles title. Meanwhile, Katherine Ip (ITF 293), who just turned 15 last month, lifted her first local major when she defeated No. 3 seed Ki Yan Tung to win the ladies' singles final, 6-2, 6-1.
Coenie Van Wyk and Katherine Ip are first time winners at King's Park this time round following runner-up finishes to Wayne Wong and Wu Ho Ching in the men's and ladies' finals respectively last year.
Roll of Honour (1974-2010)
Conceding his opening service game to begin Sunday's men's final, top seed Wayne Wong broke back immediately for 1-1 after creating a spate of opportunities in the ensuing game, as he finally came good with his fourth break point.
However, Van Wyk, as it turned out, would not face another break point until the sixth game of the second set.
It was still even-steven at 3-3 in the first when the No. 2 seed broke through again, taking full advantage of the defending champion's woeful first serve percentages and exploiting his opponent's imperfect mobility due to a thigh strain he picked up following the quarterfinal with David Hsu.
The South African rode the momentum and easily held for the opening set, 6-4.
Continuing with where he had left off, Van Wyk broke the No. 1 seed after the changeover for a quick-fire 2-0 lead.
In the next game, Wayne Wong was mired in a dog fight to repel three break points just to reach 2-1 to avoid staring a 0-3 hole in his face.
Sensing his opponent is ripe for the fall, the South African wasted no time in securing a second break of serve to lead 4-1. Even so, he double faulted tentatively to trail 0-40 in the next game before he managed to pocket the next five points on the trot to eventually consolidate the vital break for 5-1.
After holding for 5-2, Wayne Wong wasted three break points chances when he initially had his opponent down 15-40, before registering a match-saving break to peg the score momentarily back to 5-3.
Just when it seemed the No. 2 seed was faltering with the finish line in sight, he came good on his second break opportunity in the next game to seal the set and the match, 6-4, 6-3, despite Wayne Wong's last ditch effort of saving a match point when he was serving to stay in the match at 30-40.
Coming into the final, the South African has been winless against Wayne Wong in three previous meetings here in Hong Kong, coming away second best in the semifinals of the CRC Open 2008 and Hong Kong Tennis Champions Cup 2009, in addition to last year's SCAA Open final.
In fact the second seed came close to not making this year's SCAA Open final all together had he not overturned a 0-4, 0-40, final set deficit against reigning HK Nationals title holder, Jack Hui, in a semifinal match that took almost three hours to complete on Friday evening.
Van Wyk, though, was far from finished for the day, as he returned to court less than an hour later to bag the doubles title together with Jason Lijewski when they came from a set down to beat Jack Hui and Jonathan Chu, 5-7, 6-1, 6-3.
Van Wyk has previously enjoyed doubles success on the pro circuit when he teamed up with compatriot Johan Du Randt to capture the West Africa Satellite Week 4 and the USA F22 Futures with Irishman John Doran in 2001.
Meanwhile, in the ladies' singles final on Saturday, Katherine Ip, who just turned 15 last month and already a twice runner-up in this event the past couple of years, was never seriously threatened at any stage, as she did not face a break point and was taken to deuce on her serve just once in the entire match.
After breaking Ki Yan Tung in the opening game, the No. 4 seed added a late break in the penultimate game to take the first set, 6-2. She then raced to a 4-0 lead in the second set before her opponent saved two break points to get on the board, 4-1.
Katherine Ip then let slip a game point and was taken to deuce for the only time in the match before she quickly righted any doubts by coming through with the next pair of points to hold for 5-1.
On the verge of her first local major, she pounced on the No. 3 seed's serve and broke her opponent to 15 to cement a no nonsense, 6-2, 6-1, victory.
Paulette Moreno (1982) and Jacklyn Fu (1991) both triumphed as ladies' open singles champions at the SCAA Open as 14-year-olds.
The pair of singles finalists then returned to court later in the afternoon and collaborated to take the ladies' doubles title when they beat Vivian Lin and Leung Lok Sze in the final, 6-2, 6-3.
Their unseeded opponents' route to the final was cleared of roadblocks after No. 2 seeds Jessica Yang and Liu Min, as well as No. 4 Carmen Lai and Venus Pang, both conceded walkovers in the semis and quarters respectively.
