With a place in the Junior Davis Cup World Finals at stake, No. 5 seeds Australia won the quarterfinal on Saturday 3-0 to advance at the expense of Hong Kong, while over in the Junior Fed Cup consolations, the girls from the territory beat Sri Lanka 3-0 to advance to the 9th-12th Place Playoffs against Chinese Taipei.
At number two singles, Joey Swaysland (ITF 244) defeated Vincent Yau (ITF 1017) in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1, to give the home side the early advantage before Luke Saville (ITF 340) beat Justin To, 6-3, 6-1, to establish a winning 2-0 lead.
Joey Swaysland then teamed up with Todd Volmari to beat Justin To and Vincent Yau, 6-1, 6-3, to complete the final score line.
The JDC duo of Justin To and Vincent Yau will next face Thailand in the consolations. The winner from this encounter will progress to a 5th-6th Place Playoff against either Japan or New Zealand.
The territory, however, by virtue of having reached the knockout stage, will finish no worse than 8th place overall.
Pat Rafter's 5th-seeded Aussies now face No. 1 seed Korea in the semifinals, with the winner going through to the final against either No. 3 Uzbekistan or second-seeded India.
All four teams have already secured their tickets to the World Finals, to be held from September 29 to October 4 in San Luis Potosi, Mexico.
Over on the girls' side, Hong Kong easily beat Sri Lanka on Saturday to register its second win in a row here at the Asia/Oceania Qualifying. In the final round robin match on Friday, the HK team beat Malaysia also by the score of 3-0.
First up against Sri Lanka was Lucy Tang, who despite yielding the second set, came back with a fury to win against Kemalie Herath, 6-0, 5-7, 6-0. Leung Lok Sze then started at No. 1 singles and duly saw off the challenge of Nilushi Fernando in straight sets, 6-3, 6-0. Then in the doubles, Lucy Tang, starting for the fourth match in a row as the lynchpin, partnered Katherine Ip to a one-sided 6-0, 6-2, decision against Kemalie Herath and Sherine Wijesingha to complete the final score line.
Hong Kong, Chinese Taipei, New Zealand, Kazakhstan are locked in a battle for 9th-12th positions overall. The winner of the HK-TPE match-up will progress to a 9th-10th Place Playoff with either New Zealand or Kazakhstan.
On the contrary, the losing team from either encounter will square off in the 11th-12th Place Playoff.
Japan, China, Indonesia, and Australia all won their quarterfinal matches on Saturday, while also qualifying for the World Finals in Mexico later this September.
The Junior Davis Cup & Junior Fed Cup Asia/Oceania Qualifying event is held at the Shepparton Lawn Tennis Club and Tatura Lawn Tennis Club throughout the week of April 15-20.
The Junior Davis Cup/Junior Fed Cup Qualifying begins with a round robin stage where teams are divided into four groups. After three rounds of matches, the top two teams of each group then advance to the knockout stage (quarterfinals). The top 4-placed teams (i.e. semifinalists) will then progress to the World Finals where they will compete against the best 16U teams from around the globe – Africa, Europe, and North America, etc.
This year's World Finals will be held from September 29 to October 4 in San Luis Potosi, Mexico.
