At The Junior Championships, Wimbledon, second-seeded world No. 3, Arantxa Rus, advanced to the girls' singles third round at the expense of Jessica Yang (ITF 24) with a 6-3, 6-0 victory. Meanwhile, in the girls' doubles, Jessica and Thailand's Kanyapat Narattana went out in the opening round to No. 6 seeds Jessica Moore and Poloma Hercog, 6-3, 6-3.
Although Jessica was able to wrestle back an early loss of serve to peg the score back to 2-3 in the opening set, the number two seed from Holland was able to conjure a crucial second break towards the business end to snatch the opening set, 6-3.
After securing another a break of serve to open the second set, the reigning Australian Open Junior Champion never let up and laid siege on the rest of Jessica's service games, breaking the Hong Kong No. 1 twice more to run away with the second set, 6-0.
Travelling Coach, Choi Hee June, reports from London: "In the first set, Jessica started slow and was down 0-3. She came back to 2-3, but could not hold her serve to get back to 3-all. At 2-4, Rus just took off to get the first set."
"In the second set, Jessica should have treated this set as the new start, but she played some loose points (30-0 up and giving away a couple of easy points) and that gave Rus a lot of confidence. When Rus was up 3-0, she basically played her the best tennis and took the match."
"However, I believe Jessica has learned some new things this week (mental aspect and how to play the scores better) that will enable her to compete with these top girls," he added.
The match statistics once again told the tale, especially in several areas of play where Rus enjoyed a significant upper hand.
Although both players had roughly the same number of unforced errors (15 to 12), Rus had a huge advantage in receiving points won, as she managed to take 25 of 41 (61%), while Jessica could only claim 13 of 45 (29%).
In all, Rus managed to convert 5 out of the 7 break point opportunities she created and held a whopping 57-29 advantage in terms of total points won, which, at the end of the day, proved too difficult a state of affairs for Jessica to overcome.
The girls' singles final, which will be played today (Saturday), pits No. 3 seed Noppawan Lertcheewakarn (ITF 3) of Thailand up against Britain's 14-year-old Laura Robson (ITF 36).
Robson, who has not dropped a set so far in the tournament, beat No. 1 seed Melanie Oudin of USA, 6-3, 6-1, in round two after having lost to the same opponent in the final of last week's G1 Roehampton when the Brit had led by a set.
In the girls' doubles, the HK-Thai combination of Jessica Yang and Kanyapat Narattana fell to No. 6 seeds Jessica Moore of Australia and Poloma Hercog of Slovenia in the opening round in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3.
Moore and Hercog also teamed up to win the girls' doubles title at this year's Roland Garros Junior Championships where they came from a set down to beat Dutch pair Lesley Kerkhove and Arantxa Rus in a third-set super-tiebreak, 5-7, 6-1, [10-7].
Meanwhile, 15-year-old former Hong Kong resident Tara Moore has teamed up with fellow Brit Heather Watson to reach the girls' doubles quarterfinals after they prevailed over Katarzyna Piter of Poland and Romana Tabakova of Slovakia in a dramatic third set, 6-3, 5-7, 9-7.
The British pair will now face unseeded Sally Peers and Isabelle Holland for a place in the semis after the Aussie pair had knocked out No. 2 seeds Ana Bogdan of Romania and Ksenia Lykina of Russia in the previous round.
