Hong Kong places 5th at WJT Boys Qualifying
By Andy Yanne @ 9:45 AM :: 365 Views ::

Team HKAfter a rain-soaked Saturday at the East Lake Tennis Club in Shenzhen, both Chinese Taipei and the sixth-seeded HK team of Kevin Wong, Kelvin Lam, and Vincent Yau were declared as joint 5th place getter at the WJT Asia/Oceania Qualifying when the final day's schedule was completely wiped out. China, Korea, Australia, and India are through to the WJT Finals later this summer in Prostejov.

Hong Kong was all set to battle Chinese Taipei in the 5th – 6th Place Playoff on Saturday but heavy rains, unfortunately, prevented any play whatsoever. Thus, China and Korea were declared joint 1st, with Australia and India in equal third place.

Chinese Taipei had earlier upset No. 5 seeds Japan in the round robin stage to advance to the quarterfinals in the expense of the Japanese. Japan eneded up down in a lowly 10th place after losing to Thailand in the 9th - 10th Place Playoff when Thai number one Samapun Sukanan came from a set down to beat his counterpart, Yuki Muramatsu, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 before teaming up with Samboon Prasanwan to win the deciding doubles in straight sets.

This year, the Boys' 14U team from Hong Kong was accorded a No. 6 seeding for the Regionals, sustained obviously by the good play of Kelvin Lam, who came third overall to India's Ronit Bisht and Digvijay Singh at last month's ITF 14U Asian Jr Championships.

Not to be outdone is the diminutive, yet battle-hardened Kevin Wong, who won the Boys' 12U singles and doubles of the 2007 China Nike Junior Tour Grand Masters in Beijing last September. He then crossed swords with the world's best at the 46th Junior Orange Bowl in Florida last December when he went on a six-match win streak in the B12 consolations, defeating no less than three seeded players in succession to reach the last eight before falling to top-seeded Chung Hyeon of Korea, 7-5, 6-4.

The 12-year-old's David versus Goliath giant-slaying exploits are slowly but surely becoming legendary.

The World Junior Tennis Competition is the ITF Team Championships for Boy and Girls of 14 & Under. Notable players who have competed in the WJT over the years included Tommy Haas, Xavier Malisse, Lleyton Hewitt, Guillermo Coria, David Nalbandian, Rafael Nadal, Justine Henin, Kim Clijsters, Amelie Mauresmo, Lina Krasnoroutskaya, Daniela Hantuchova.
