DBS, DGS triumphant at K·Swiss Inter-School Championships
By Andy Yanne @ 1:31 PM :: 789 Views ::
Team DBSAlthough rain has wreaked havoc on this year's KSwiss Inter-School Tennis Championships 2008, the favourites were not to be denied, as Diocesan Boys' School beat Ying Wa College, 2-0, to win the Boys' Division 1 title, while Diocesan Girls' School defeated Hong Kong International School, 2-0, to lift the Girls' equivalent for the fourth straight time.

Representing title sponsors K·Swiss at the prize presentation was Mr. Anthony Ma (Sales & Marketing).

Earlier, the conclusion of the Boys' Division II round robins saw Wah Yan College A (KLN), Ying Wa College, Wah Yan College B (KLN), Canadian International School of Hong Kong, Christian Alliance SCChan Memorial College, Yuen Long Merchants Association Secondary School, and French International School emerge to progress to the knockout stage.

Ying Wa College – powered by the likes of Lui Shing Fung, Michael Kwong, and Chau Kwan Lam – proved too strong for their Division II opposition, as they romped through the draw with three successive 3-0 victories to advance to the Division I round robins.

However, Hong Kong International School, the two-time defending champions, could not stop Ying Wa's momentum, even though Tyler Leung has staked his team to a 1-0 lead by beating Michael Kwong first up. For following his match-saving win in the singles, Lui Shing Fung then teamed up with Chau Kwan Lam to bag the deciding doubles, 6-4, against Tyler Leung and Tyler Mallery to send YWC to the final against DBS.

In the Girls' Division I semifinal, a Samantha Chao-led HKIS team overcame Ki Yan Tung's Heep Yun School, 2-1, to earn the right for a crack at the all-powerful DGS in the final.

The Boys' Division I final, as expected, hinged on the face-off between the two number ones. After Wong Yat Sing romped to a 6-1 win over Michael Kwong in the opening singles, it was down to the duel between Hong Kong's B14 No. 1 Kelvin Lam and the second ranked player in the B16s, Lui Shing Fung. A win by Kelvin Lam will give DBS its first title since the early part of 2005, while Lui Shing Fung had to win to keep the match alive, just as he did against HKIS and La Salle earlier in the championships.

In the end, it was a match befitting of the occasion, as Kelvin Lam overcame Lui Shing Fung's early lead to edge his fellow NTS player in a tiebreak, 8-6, to secure the title for DBS.

Incidentally, the same two players also contested the 2007 CRC Open School Boys' Singles final, with Kelvin Lam triumphing 7-5, 6-4, on that occasion, while the School Boys' Doubles in that same tournament went to Lui Shing Fung and Chau Kwan Lam, who defeated Tyler Leung and Ricky Hui, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, in the final.

Note that en route to the Boys' D1 final, Ying Wa College managed to beat traditional inter-school powerhouses HKIS in the semis and also La Salle College in the group stage. Lui Shing Fung, again having needed to produce a match-saving win in his singles, then teamed up with Chau Kwan Lam to win the decisive doubles against Rex Lo and Lau Yiu Bun to register a 2-1 victory against La Salle.

In the Girls' Division I final, DGS's one-two punch of Leung Lok Sze and Sher Pui Wing was too much for HKIS, as the former beat Sunny Lampl, 6-2, while the latter also beat Samantha Chao by the same score to seal a 2-0 victory.

Both Leung Lok Sze and Sher Pui Wing were members of the HK team that competed at last year's 6th National City Games in Wuhan. In 2007, Sher Pui Wing was a member of the Hong Kong Junior Fed Cup team that competed at the Asia/Oceania Zone Qualifying, while Leung Lok Sze, still only 14, has been a two-time representative for the territory at the World Junior Tennis competition.

In order to comprehend DGS's superiority, one only has to look over at their bench where senior members Geraldine Leong and Sher Chun Wing had the luxury of playing the role of cheerleaders rather than being called into action.

With the win, DGS has now claimed its fourth successive inter-school title since it began in 2005. During that stretch, they beat Heep Yun School, Maryknoll Convent School twice, and now HKIS.

The HKTA would like to thank title sponsors K•Swiss for their continued support not only in the Inter-School Championships but also various categories of junior events in the past.   Their commitment to the sport has benefitted the local community tremendously over the years and we look forward to furthering our quality relationship with K•Swiss in many more years to come.
