Over the weekend, Yu Hiu Tung was only two points away from defeat but pulled away in the end to beat reigning Triple Crown winner, Goran Bosalevski, 5-7, 7-6(5), 6-0, to lift the HK Tennis Champions Cup 2008. In addition, Henry So & Ma Rong successfully defended their doubles title by defeating Andrew Town & Adrian Montesinos, 7-5, 6-2, in a highly entertaining final.
Earlier in the men's singles semifinals, Yu Hiu Tung beat Hu Bing in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3, while Goran Bosalevski accounted for defending champion, Wayne Wong, in a third set super-tiebreak, 5-7, 6-3, [10-6].

According to CBGCC Tennis Director, Stephen So, "Finals day started with Yu Hiu Tung easily overcoming a tired but very talented Hu Bing, 6-2, 6-3, while Goran Bosalevski had to come back from behind to beat Wayne Wong in a two-and-a-half-hour battle. Both players had chances and with Wayne Wong 4-0 up in the super-tiebreak, looked set to get to his second consecutive final. However, his lack of match fitness didn't exactly help his cause and he was visibly tiring towards the end, with Goran taking it 10-6."
After winning their first four meetings, Wayne's career head-to-head with Goran now stands at 4-2, with their previous encounter coming in last year's CRC Open final. When these two players met in the round robins at Clearwater Bay last year, Wayne Wong bagged the last six points from 4-4 to win the third set super-tiebreak.
As things began to unfold in the title decider, Tung first clawed his way to a 5-2 lead in the opening set before the Triple Crown winner reeled off the next five games to win it, 7-5.
"I kind of definitely let my foot off the pedal a bit once I got the lead, which shouldn't have happened. Plus he was also playing very deep towards the end of the first set. I basically got pinned back with nowhere to go. I mean, every time I had the lead, he just played real aggressive tennis," said the newly crowned champion, Yu Hiu Tung.
Tung again drew first blood in the second set and led 5-3 but yielded the break advantage and was eventually forced into a tiebreak after Goran had conjured a break of his own. In the ensuing tiebreak, Tung jumped out to a seemingly authoritative 5-1 lead but was yet again pegged back to 5-5 before winning the next two points helped along with a double fault from his opponent to finally close it out, 7-5.
Tung took a quick-fire 3-0 lead in the third set when the Triple Crown winner motioned for the trainer to have his shoulder problem looked at. Though he fought on gallantly, the resistance from Goran was not nearly enough to fend off a player who has the finish line in full sight. Tung duly took the next three games to win this year's title and with it, a cheque for $57,000 after going undefeated in all matches.
The total prize money for winning the men's singles in all three local majors adds up to $49,000.
The men's doubles final was a very exciting encounter with home crowd favourite and defending champions Henry So and Ma Rong up against the experienced Aussies Andrew Town and Adrian Montesinos.
"So and Ma took an early 5-2 lead, only to strike some nerves allowing Town and Montesinos to come back to 5-all," recounted Stephen. "After some good serving and quick net exchanges the defending champions finally came through with the opening set, 7-5."
"In the second they jumped ahead with their winning momentum, caught a little resistance midway through the set, and eventually defended their title in a very entertaining match," added Stephen.
However, due to injuries sustained by Benny Lin and Jamie Holmes after the round robins, Monty Lo and Ross Elliott stepped in as alternates in their respective places in the semifinals. In fact, Jason Lijewski and Ross Elliott were leading Town and Montesinos 7-1 in the super-tiebreak at one stage but could not close it out in the end, losing it 10-8.
