On Friday, defending champion Wayne Wong kicked off the men's singles event from the Blue Group with a hard-fought 6-3, 7-6(0), win against Sean Cooper in the morning. Then he had an even closer call in the afternoon session when he came from 6-2 down in the third set super-tiebreak against former University of Arizona No. 1, Whi Kim, to win, 6-4, 4-6, [10-6].

Last year's runner-up, Yu Hiu Tung, then followed suit with a clinical, 6-3, 6-2, victory against Goran Bosalevski in the Red Group. It was Bosalevski's first loss since he went down against Yu Hiu Tung, 6-2, 6-4, in last year's semifinals.

Wayne Wong then defeated Hu Bing, 6-4, 6-4, to remain unbeaten and finished atop the Blue Group. Hu Bing, however, managed to beat both Whi Kim and Sean Cooper to qualify in second place.

Over in the Red Group, Yu Hiu Tung beat Michael Lai, 6-3, 6-3, on Saturday to finish in top spot, while Goran Bosalevski defeated Michael Lai, 2-6, 6-3, [10-5] and Dino Dell'Orto, 6-3, 6-2, to claim second place. Dino, Hong Kong's number one junior, had actually beaten Michael Lai on Friday and would have qualified had he been able to beat the reigning Triple Crown winner in his last group match on Saturday.

In the doubles, the pairings of Henry So/Ma Rong and Jamie Holmes/Jason Lijewski had been drawn in the same group in the round robin stage for the second year running. Once again, both teams easily qualified for the knockout stage from the Red Group. Youngsters Gary Yam/Ryan Ho defeated Monty Lo/Leo Liu, 6-4, 7-6(5), to finish in third place.

In the Blue Group, last year's CRC Open and HK National winning tandem, Andrew Town/Adrian Montesinos, qualified in first place ahead of 2003 champions, Benny Lin/Stephen So. The pairing of Ross Elliott/Nathan Booth beat Jason Sankey/Graeme Foster, 6-1, 6-4, to finish in third place.

In the semis on Saturday, defending champions Henry So/Ma Rong defeated Monty Lo/Stephen So in straight sets, 7-5, 6-1. Joining them in the final will be the combo of Andrew Town/Adrian Montesinos, who edged out Ross Elliott/Jason Lijewski in a nail-biting third set super-tiebreak, 1-6 7-6(3), [10-8].

In 2004, the Town/Montesinos combination had reached the semifinals but was then defeated by the Wayne Wong/Yu Hiu Tung partnership, 6-4, 6-2. Town, in fact, teamed up with Jamie Holmes to reach the final of the inaugural Clearwater Bay Indoor Doubles Classic in 2003 when they beat John Hui/Melvin Tong in arguably the closest of all matches, 5-7, 7-6(7), [15-13]. However, the Aussies fell in the final to Benny Lin/Stephen So, 7-6(5), 6-4.
