HK Nationals 2007 to conclude this weekend at VP
By Andy Yanne @ 9:52 PM :: 583 Views ::
HK Nationals 2007Last Friday night, fourth-seeded Roland Liu and Chattida Thimjapo combined to beat No. 5 seed Nathan Booth and Yang Yi to win the mixed doubles title at the HK National Tennis Championships 2007. Meanwhile, the local triple is still on for top seed Goran Bosalevski, who has already pocketed this season's SCAA and CRC Open titles.

In the previous week, former WTA No. 578 Chattida Thimjapo had also won the Ladies' Doubles title together with 12-year-old Katherine Ip when they saved three match points in the third set tiebreak to beat No. 2 seed Jessica Yang and Feng Yi-Di, in the final, 4-6, 6-4, 7-6(6).

Top half of the Doctor's Choice Men's Open Singles draw will feature No. 1 seed Goran Bosalevski, who is on course for the local triple after securing both SCAA and CRC Opens recently. Standing in his way of a semifinal berth is Jason Lijewski, who took his doubles partner to a third set tiebreak at last month's CRC Open before losing, 7-5, 3-6, 7-6(2).

Should the number one seed advance, he will face either No. 4 seed Andrew Town or Enrico Abadia for a place in the finals.

The last time Bosalevski and Town squared off was at the quarterfinal stage of the CRC Open 2006 when the former triumphed in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2.

While Bosalevski will be bidding for his first HK National title, Town, on the contrary, had already been a three-time winner here at Victoria Park. He won two-straight from 1998-99 by beating Shane Barr and then Andres Battad the following year. The Aussie added a third title last season when he beat the territory's leading 18U player, Kevin Kung, in the final, 6-2, 4-6, 6-2.

In the bottom bracket, No. 3 seed Dino Dell'Orto will be bidding for a second appearance in the semifinals of a local major this season when he entertains unseeded Ross Elliott. The remaining round of eight match-up will pit 5-8th seed Jason Sankey up against second seed Michael Lai in a repeat of their recent quarterfinal encounter at the CRC Open that was won by the latter, 6-1, 6-2.

In the Men's Doubles, top seeded Andrew Town/Adrian Montesinos will go against No. 4 seed Jason Sankey/Graeme Foster, while No. 2 seed Goran Bosalevski/Jason Lijewski has a showdown with third-seeded Yu Hiu Tung/Michael Lai in the other semifinal.

These same four teams also made it to the semis at last month's CRC Open where Town/Montesinos defeated Bosalevski/Lijewski to win their third men's doubles title at that tournament – a feat last achieved by Melvin Tong/Andy Brothers in 1999.

Both Town and Montesinos have won the doubles title here at the Nationals, but with different partners. The former combined with Geoff Rafter to win in 2002 while the latter joined forces with Michael Brown to lift the trophy in 2001. They did, however, finish in second place twice before when they lost to Melvin Tong/Chris Numbers in the 2000 final and also to Jack Hui/Yu Hiu Tung in the 2004 title match.

It is no secret that Goran Bosalevski is gunning for a piece of local history, for unless records suggest otherwise, former Hong Kong standout, Colin Grant (1984), and Aussie Shane Barr (1997), were the only players to sweep all three majors in the territory in a calendar season.

The top seed has only dropped two sets thus far in winning the first two majors, albeit needing to win third set tiebreaks against Jason Lijewski and Michael Lai respectively to go through. The question begs to be answered: Who can stop Goran Bosalevski from making a clean sweep this year?

Number two seed Michael Lai, who had him on the ropes before losing their CRC Open 2007 semifinal encounter in a third set tiebreak, is hoping for a rematch. But so does 16-year-old Dino Dell'Orto, the No. 3 seed at VP, who went down against Goran in the SCAA Open title match in what was his first final in a local major.

Michael Lai and Dino Dell'Orto, however, are both in the bottom half of the draw. Should they get through their respective quarterfinals, they would therefore need to duel it out between themselves before securing their place in Saturday's final – assuming, of course, the top seed coming through the top half of the draw unscathed.

The Ladies' B Doubles final and the Men's Doubles final are scheduled for Wednesday night, while the Men's Singles semifinals and the Ladies' B Singles semifinals will also take place earlier that same evening.
