With its non-playing captain Dr. Stanley Ho amongst the 200-strong spectators, CRC (6-0) saw off the visiting LRC (6-0) contingent, 6-3, to repeat as champions of the Men's Premier League. CRC had been the Premier's dominant force, having in its possession 7 out of the past 11 summer league titles.
Besides the Craigengower Cricket Club in 2000, Kowloon Cricket Club in 2004, and the South China Athletic Association in 2005, CRC had won every edition of the Summer Premier League since 1996. On the other hand, LRC was, in actual fact, the inaugural winner of the Premier Men's Winter League back in the 1996-97 season.
Both CRC and LRC headed into last Thursday night's final league match with identical and unbeaten 6-0 records, which meant the winners to emerge from this contest would also take home the overall Summer League title. The nominated line-ups were as follows:
CRC LRC
Hu Bing/Gilbert Wong Andrew Town/Adrian Montesinos
Wayne Wong/Yu Hiu Tung Jason Sankey/Graham Foster
Michael Lai/Ronald Chow Sean Cooper/Malcolm Swan
The home team's tandem of Wayne Wong and Yu Hiu Tung bagged all three points as expected and was generally untroubled all night. The only instance where they trailed at any one point was at the beginning of their opening match against Jason Sankey/Graham Foster when LRC's No. 2 pairing broke Tung in the second game to go up 3-0.
The HK Davis Cuppers, however, were able to snap out of their lackadaisical display before it was too late, as they went on to take the next six games to grab the opening point, 6-3. The duo then accounted for both Andrew Town/Adrian Montesinos, as well as Sean Cooper/Malcolm Swan with identical scores of 6-2 in the subsequent rounds.
Although the win by Wayne and Tung against the Cooper/Swan combo turned out to be the match clincher, the bulk of the hard work was indubitably being churned out by Hu Bing over on Court 2, as the 2003 CRC Open champion was handed the responsibility of bringing along yet-to-be proven teenager, Gilbert Wong. The pair's first and second round wins against the Cooper/Swan and Sankey/Foster pairings was where the real groundwork was being laid, as CRC was able to move into the final round of matches with a 4-2 lead in hand as opposed to a 3-3 stalemate or worse, which, otherwise, would have favoured LRC considerably.
The outcome was then rendered almost a surety once CRC had needed just one more victory from the last round of matches, as Wayne and Tung duly secured the final, title clinching point without much hullabaloo.
Meanwhile, with just two more round of matches to go in the Ladies' Premier League, KCC looks set to be crowned champions for the fifth consecutive year, even though they are tied at 5 wins apiece with CRC atop the standings. The difference is that KCC had already beaten rivals CRC 5-4 in week two, and is currently the only undefeated team. Should they win their remaining matches against HKCC and SCAA, the League title will once again be theirs.
Since the inaugural edition of the Premier League during the 1996 season, KCC had been the all-conquering side in the Ladies' Premier division, having captured 6 out of the 9 titles available (no competition between the years 1997-98). LRC won the first edition in 1996, with CRC bagging back-to-back titles from 2001-02.
