Wu Di (CHN)Victoria Park proved to be a happy hunting ground for China's Wu Di and Taiwan's Chan Hao-Ching, as they both won their maiden title on the world junior circuit here at the ITF Grade 4 Hong Kong Open Jr Championships 2006 on Saturday.

Number six seed Wu Di (ITF 690), who came from a set down to beat top-seeded Gilbert Wong in the previous round, defeated No. 11 Lee Yi-Pei (ITF 1224) of Taiwan, 7-5, 6-1, to win the boys' singles.

Neither player was able to win their own serves through the opening four games of the match, until both finally managed to hold for a 3-3 stalemate. Things were going swell for Lee Yi-Pei after he broke Wu Di at 15 and then saving three break points to go up 5-3. Needing to hold serve just to stay in the set, Wu Di quickly fell behind 15-40 in the next game to hand Lee Yi-Pei three set points. However, the No. 6 seed dug deep to win the next four, including a thumping ace at the end, to hold for 5-4.

The pivotal tenth game saw Lee Yi-Pei fend off two break points, but Wu Di was equal to the task, as he overcame three set points himself before finally breaking the No. 11 seed on the sixth deuce to pull even at 5-5. The momentum now lay with the number six seed, as he wasted no time in holding serve at love to lead 6-5. The Taiwanese player did well enough to save a set point at 30-40 down on his serve in the next game, but an untimely double fault on the second deuce saw him surrender the first set, 7-5, to his opponent.

In the second set, two breaks of serves by Wu Di, first in the second game and again in the seventh, was all he needed to secure the second set and the match, 7-5, 6-1, against a somewhat discouraged Lee Yi-Pei, who failed to recover from that momentous tenth game in the opener.

Chan Hao-Ching (TPE) In the girls' singles, Taiwan's unranked thirteen-year-old Chan Hao-Ching made her debut on the world junior circuit a triumphant one when she overcame a slight rain disruption to beat No. 6 seed Geraldine Leong (ITF 817), 6-1, 1-6, 6-3, in the final.

Chan Hao-Ching began by electing to receive first and promptly broke Geraldine's serve for a quick-fire 1-0 lead. After staving off three break points from 0-40 down in the second game to consolidate, the player from Taiwan proceeded to break the number six seed's serve twice more to jump out to a whopping 5-0 lead. Although the HK Junior Fed Cupper finally managed to get on the board by breaking her opponent's serve in the sixth game, she was to lose her own service game straight after, as Chan Hao-Ching wrapped up the first set, 6-1.

The second set was a mirror image of the first; only this time, it was Geraldine's turn to assert her presence. She broke Chan Hao-Ching's serve three times to register a 5-0 lead before her opponent saved a set point in the sixth game to break for 5-1. However, Geraldine quickly erased any hopes of a fight-back by her opponent when she broke right back in the next game to even the final at a set apiece.

The third set saw Chan Hao-Ching re-establish her foothold by conjuring two early breaks to jump out to a commanding 5-1 lead. After holding serve in the next game, the sixth-seeded HK rep did well to stay alive by breaking Chan Hao-Ching at fifteen for 5-3. However, it was a case of too little, too late, as the 13-year-old from Taiwan, still with a break in hand, produced one final break of her own to seal her maiden ITF World Junior Circuit title.

Gilbert Wong & Kevin Kung (HKG) The final event of this year's tournament saw top-seeded local entries Gilbert Wong (ITF 280) & Kevin Kung (ITF 579) capture the boys' doubles title when they defeated the Korean pairing of Jung Do-Yong (ITF 1669) & Lee Young-Kwang (ITF 1908) in the final, 6-3, 6-3, in a little over an hour.

Servers were dominant in this contest, as a lone break on the Jung Do-Young serve in the seventh game was what it took the HK pair to win the first set, 6-3. In the second game of the second set, Kevin Kung's serve was under siege, as he was finally broken on deuce number three even though he managed to fight off two earlier break points. Lee Young-Kwang then consolidated for a seemingly encouraging 3-0 lead.

Not so, apparently.

The top-seeded Hong Kong duo kicked it up a notch and produced three successive breaks to run away with the next six games to round out, 6-3, 6-3, winners. This was Gilbert and Kevin's second doubles triumph together as a tandem after they had picked up the G5 Hong Kong ITF Jr Tournament title back in January.
